dh gave dd a cracker with peanut butter...NEVER LISTENS TO ME!!!!! Then she started having a skin reactin on ther face of redness, irritated eyes, etc. NO problems breathing however. Could this be an allergy to peanuts, or would seh have a more drastic reaction like closed windpipe?
what do we do now?

Sounds like a peanut allergy to me - thank goodness not with breathing problems. Allergies can be in different degrees - hers may just be more mild. I'd definitely let the doctor know and hold off on nuts until he advises (probably at least 3). You can treat the reaction with Benadryl if it lingers.

The first time a reaction occurs it is usually mild whether or not a child will go on to have a severe allergy. If there is a major problem the reaction becomes more severe with increased exposure.

Most children have mild to moderate reactions (rash, wheezing, tingling, diarrhea, etc.) to the offending food before the allergy becomes severe. In a few children, the first time they eat the particular food, they become sensitized and the second time they eat even a miniscule amount of that food, an explosive reaction occurs.
Obviously in your case let's hope this won't be the case. Not all people will peanut allergies do have anaphylaxsis (the serious version with breathing problems). But I'm just mentioning it as a 'mild' reaction first time does not mean there won't be more serious problems later on.
I would talk to your GP and ask to be referred to an allergy specialist. Fingers crossed.

As pp said, it sound like an allergy. My son has a tree nut allergy and his first reaction included hives on his face all around his mouth and alittle difficulty breathing (although it went away within 15 minutes) I would definitely avoid ALL nuts for now and see your doctor or an allergist for testing! My son's allergist advised us that the next reaction would be even worse. He compared it to a bucket filling with water. Each reaction adds a little more and a little more in their system until it reaches a threshold and it all spills over ie: Anapylactic shock! Good luck. Erin

That is SO scary!!! Dh has never been one to listen to me. I've told him at least a dozen of times about nuts. Hopefully now he'll listen. IT should be no problem to keep them out of her diet now. I don't believe there are allergy tests for lo's this age are there. I'm guessing they only do them when they're 3 or so? Does anyone know?
-
I'm pretty sure testing can be done. I know some skin tests can be done from 4 months and some blood tests are done under a year. However there's obviously some issue about whether further testing can increase sensitization with more exposure to the allergen. Skin tests can actually be dangerous in some cases so you may be advised to assume allergy but wait until later for the actual test. You could still talk to an allergist for advice on the way forward. I would still ask for a referral to find out the full story.
Try not to panic just yet (but obviously be careful). Some children don't have the serious version and some even grow out of a peanut allergy. Best Wishes.

I just hope she is n't one of those who's allergic to EVERYTHING! I've already noticed the rubbing of they eyes, etc with seasonal allergies, and she has an intollerance to milk. If she has over3-4 oz at a time, she vomitts like crazy. She did fine with breastmilk, but cows milk by itself or a dairy product she has trouble with most.
Not looking good. For her...and she LOVES to eat :D

Best of luck to you. My son was tested at 2 1/2. They may advise you to stay away from peanuts until an older age and assume an allergy. Hopefully it is something she will outgrow. Erin

Yes, that is what the dr said. Her brother had the same thing and outgrew it, so hopefully she will too. We have daily meds for seasonal allergies, and another med for breakouts.
Thank you all for your help! I think we have this under control now...dh is FINALLY listening to me about what she can and cannot have!!! :D

So glad to hear it! Good luck! Erin
