Post by: Sarah˛ on May 28, 2007, 16:51:47 pm

Hmmm, maybe try a bit of trace dairy at 6 months and see how she reacts? And if a problem wait until 9 months to try again? Is she on probiotics?

No, she's not on probiotics. I haven't talked to her ped about it and I'm not sure where to get them.  ???

What are probiotics? and what do they do?

I tried Ice cream last night because I wanted it soooo bad.  I'm paying for it today.  Thinking it really wasn't worth it... but boy Ben & Jerry's is good!

TBH many Peds aren't up on the benefits of probiotics but they are totally safe for LOs and really beneficial too. They can help mature an immature digestive system and often help with food intolerances as such. You can find good dairy free brands at most health stores/organic markets, Whole Foods and online. I particularly like Nature's Way Primadophilus for Children and Udo's Choice for Infants. Come in powder form and you can mix with formula, EBM, baby food, etc. They definitely helped in our case!

She's EBF and will NOT take a bottle. She hasn't started solids yet, either. Do they come in liquid form that I could give her in a dropper or maybe just mix them with water?

TBH, I would wait for the 1st birthday... Read that in quite a few guidelines for intolerance.

I've never seen them in liquid form but I don't see why you couldn't mix them with a bit of water or EBM and give in a dropper. Definitely worth a try if she doesn't mind taking "medicine".

If her symptoms before weren't severe (no blood in stool or severe rashes or projectile vomiting), IMO no need to wait for a year. DD was intolerant but OK with hidden dairy by 8 months and yogurt, etc by 10 months or so.

I have the book "Smart medicine for a healthier child"  and it recommends that for a breastfed baby - a breastfeeding mother can take an acidophilus lactobacillus supplement as a friendly bacteria that improves digestion.  For a bottlefed baby it would be mixed in with their formula.   It is actually recommended for several issues such as cradle cap, nausea/vomiting, colic etc...

Enzymes helped us, but I think we were dealing with some digestive issues too.

I've also heard good things about digestive enzymes but like pp said, more for pure digestive issues, not allergies.

How did you find out that your LO was Milk Protein intolerant?  My understanding is that it could be protein (casein) or the lactose.  but how do you find out which one?  I understand that some foods you can eat based on if it is the protein or the lactose.

Lactose intolerance is actually rare for Caucasian babies. Protein intolerance is much more common. Lactose intolerance would generally lead to GI symptoms (cramps, gas, bloating) but MPI would have more symptoms including those but possibly also rashes, aggravated reflux, etc.

interesting!  thanks.  It must be lactose intolerance.  Incidentally, she is a quarter asian and her mommy is half.  where i understand lactose intolerance runs rampant.

Hi there, my babe is caucasion and does have a degree of lactose intolerance, as we tried a lactose free milk and it helped to a degree, (stopped the gas), but it was the milk protein that caused her to have the runs constantly.  Most hydrolysed milk free formula's have no lactose in them anyway.
