9 month old and the afternoon nap
« on: August 29, 2007, 22:26:37 pm »

     Hi,
My 9 month old son has literally gone wonky. He was a angel napper until recently. He used to nap for 1.5-2 hours every morning and usually a good 1.45 in the afternooon. Slowly his napping as gotten less and less. Now he's down to 1 hour in the am and 45 minutes in the pm.I read on a message board that in order to preserve his pm nap I should cut back on his am nap.I tried this today. I didn't even have to wake him from his nap this am, he woke after 30 minutes. I then put him down for his afternoon nap at 1:30 thinking he would sleep for 2hours. He woke after 45 minutes, I tried to help him back to sleep but he would have no part of it. He has 5 hours before his usual bedtime. His routine was like this but steadily dwindling.
     6:30/6:45 sometimes 7:00 wake-up
6:30 or when he woke up bottle
     8:00 solids
     9:30/9:45 nap usually until 11:00
     11:00 snack
     12:00-12:30 lunch
     2:30-3:50 nap
     bottle upon waking
     5:30- 5:45 dinner
      6:45 bath bottle story
      7:30 asleep
As time went on his afternoon nap has gotten less and less
so I tried this:
still wakes at the same time
nap 9:30 with the intent of waking him after 30 minutes. woke anyway at 10:10
pm nap at 1:30 he slept until 2:14.
I guess my question is his bedtime now basically 6:00? How do I get him to sleep longer in the afternoon. Your help is greatly appreciated. What's your advice

Hmm
Yes you are right cutting down the AM nap normally helps you preserve the PM nap.Well 45 min naps usually indicate they need more awake time.

How is his night sleep? Is he sleeping all the way through?
Are there any new developmental milestones happening like crawling etc?
Is he teething?
How is he eating during the day?
What his mood like?

Realise i'm answering your post with more questions but hopefully the answers may help pinpoint the problem ;D

Thanks for your response. He sleep through the night from 7:30 until usually 630- 6:45. He has learned to crawl, but is now bypassing that to standing and cruising. He already has 9 teeth, which never really effected him to this extent. He also eats 3 meals a day anything and everything. He always has been a jovial baby, thanks to baby whisperer at 2months. Last night I did put him to bed by 6:15. He would have nothing to do with it, he screamed until 8:15 which is when he finally went to sleep. I'm going to try again today with a short morning nap and afternoon at possibly 1:00 -1:30. Any other suggestions.

 :-\  :-\
the only thing i can think of is he is getting ready for more awake time.by about 10 months Sasha was doing 3.5hrs awake time so could be possibly be he needs more.
so yes i'd limit his nap to 30 mins (am) and try it for a week as it could take him that long to adjust his body clock.
will have a bit more of a think about this!!

O.K. Things went a bit better today. He did however wake up at 6:05 my husband told me, I didn't hear him until 6:30. He was out like a light at 9:30 this morning. He slept for 45 minutes. His afternoon nap went much better, out again right at 1:30 and low and behold he slept until 3:50. He is now asleep at 7:10. I'm hoping it just isn't because of his late night last evening. I let you know how things go, unfortunately we are going to our cabin for holidays so I'm praying to the sleep god this doesn't affect what I'm trying to maintain.Thank you sooooo much for your response.
