45 min nap - Newbie in need of help!
« on: September 14, 2007, 14:15:45 pm »
Hi, I'm a newbie.  I loved the book, but am not finding all the answers -- she'd have to write a 5000 page book for that :)

Here's my dilemma.  My 3 month old is very laid back and "easy". . she rarely cries.  She's done the EASY method from week 2 and just recently started having a hard time with her naps.  She sleeps all night (7:30p-6:30 a).  She usually has awake time for about 1.5 hrs and good quiet time and does great at going to sleep.  Problem is, about 45 mins-1 hr into the nap, she starts fussing and eventually cries.  We've tried everything from shh and pat to changing diaper to letting her cry it out, EVERYTHING.  If you get her out of bed, she's very pleasant, not fussy at all and doesn't need to eat right away.  After looking at some posts, I'm beginning to wonder if she'd be okay to have a 2nd awake time.  ONe after nap before eating -- she NEVER falls asleep while eating (except her nighttime bottle).  I think she would do well with this, but this would make us have 3 naps a day and possible a cat nap at dinner time.  What are your thoughts?!

Well, you are very lucky to have an angel baby that sleeps through already :)  Good for you!!  As for the naps, it appears that you are doing everything in your power to help your dd get through that 45 minute jolt.  Unfortunately, sometimes babies just need to grow out of it on their own.  If you have tried EVERYTHING (including increasing A time) then if I were you, I'd just go with it.  Are you leaving her to fuss for a bit when she wakes (not crying)?  Sometimes lo's will put themselves back to sleep if they are left alone.  As long as she is still sleeping through the night and doesn't seem tired after waking at 45 minutes then there really isn't much else you can do.  Sorry if I am no help!!  And PLEASE don't let your dd cry it out!!  There are other ways to help her that do not involve CIO.

Hi Mindysmeow,

You probably already saw it but there's a support thread for 45 minute nappers.  My LO went through a stint of 45 min naps and I increased her A time and that really worked for us.  They do suggest to increase A time in short amounts though (10-15 mins) so you don't have an overtired LO.  The ladies on the 45 min nap thread are really friendly too if you get frustrated and need some understanding folks to chat with.

Good luck,

Shannon

Thanks for your help!  Funny, today, we decided that we'd do the 45 min nap and SURPRISE, she slept for two hours solid!!  Oh well, you think you figure something out and the change :)
