naps too long and because of this early wakings?
« on: September 15, 2007, 18:04:30 pm »
Hi there,

I was wondering is it possible that my ds (13 months old now) woke up at 5 this morning because he's having too much daytime sleep?

During our holiday in July we switched to one nap (because he didn't fall asleep for his morning nap but was talking to himself all the time). This was ok for a while (though he was a bit grumpy), he even slept until 7.30 in the morning (normally awake at 6)!!! But then he went to daycare for the first time and there the ladies let him sleep a lot longer then we did (sometimes 3 or more hours a day). We didn't like this daycare so we switched to another lady (she's ok!) and she says he still needs 2 naps and lets him sleep. Like yesterday he did a 1.5 h morning nap and in the afternoon he slept for 1 hour 45 minutes. And this morning he was awake at 5.15... So in a couple of weeks time he went from 7.30 to 5 h wake up time... Any suggestions? He normally needs around 13 h of sleep, so today I let him sleep 1 hour in the morning and 1.5 hours in the afternoon and put him to bed at 7.30 (normally 7).

Thanks!

I think your hunch is right.  I would ask the care giver to wake him like you do at home.

My DD is 15m and we just completed the 2-1 switch.  She does a 12h night and does a 1 1/2h nap.  I wake her after 1 1/2h nap to preserve bedtime.  Although I know average nights should be 10-11h , the 12h night is working for both us and dd at this stage because we get up early so go to bed early. But do what is working for you at night, some mommies prefer more daytime sleep What was his average night before he started sleeping so much in day?  I think you should aim for that again... :)

My ds never does a 12 h night, he goes to bed at 7 and wakes up at 6, so that's around 10 1/2 -11 hours I guess. I would like him to wake up at 6.30 or 7 though... but he's always awake at 6 no matter what time we put him to bed.
When he did only 1 nap (mostly 1 -1 1/2h) he slept longer in the morning but was grumpy during the day so I guess he still needs 2 naps and who knows when we switch to 1 nap he'll sleep longer in the morning?

When they switch to one nap, their total sleep usually stay the same--it's just arranged differently, so, yes, very possible that he'll start sleeping in then.  :D

Good >:(morning... 5.30 he was awake, I'm seriously considering switching back to 1 nap... He was grumpy during the day anyway yesterday so what's the difference (me getting more sleep!)

You might also try limiting the morning nap even more.  Many babies this age take an am nap of just 20-45 minutes and then a second nap just after lunch.
