Conkers are great!
« on: September 13, 2007, 17:11:13 pm »
Me and my 20 month DS have just spent a very enjoyable hour discovering (rediscovering for me) the joys of conkers. We sat under a horse chestnut tree and opened up loads of them. Each one was a surprise and wonder for both of us. They really are amazing things! I really recommend it. Not sure who enjoyed it more!  ;D

My MIL and William went collecting conkers last week and had a wonderful time collecting them, looking at them , counting them, talking about them. I think they are gorgeous looking things too..

I love conkers!
Lots of our horse chesnuts have had some horrid disease though. They do NOT look in good shape. Pathetic little mini-conkers fell off ages ago and we seem to now be low on any decent ones :'(

Not for eating, just playing/admiring/collecting
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conker

They come from the Horse Chestnut tree. 'Eating chestnuts' come from the Sweet Chestnut tree - quite different and not related.
Horse chestnuts are actually poisonous (but you'd have to have diamond teeth to bite into one anyway) - apparently eating them can cause vomiting and sometimes paralysis. But they're fun - honest!
