Crying at 45 min mark - less naps?
« on: September 20, 2007, 00:16:17 am »
What does it mean when your lo cries after the 45min mark? I don't mind getting him up at the 45min mark if he sounds happily awake, but when he awakes crying, I go up to see and he's kinda crying while sleeping...does that make any sense? At that point, I feel like if I try to comfort him I might wake him up more or frustrate him. I think he's crying because he's still tired but for some reason cannot fall back asleep.

He sleeps fine at night (around 7 to 6am, we're hoping until 7 am soon) and he's only 11 weeks old. Not sure why he's soo cranky after a 45min sleep cycle during the day.

Is it possible that he doesnt need 3 naps + catnap, even though he's only 11 weeks.  He eats over 6 oz per feed and weighs almost 14 lbs, plus his long nighttime sleeps make him quite similar to say a 4 month old who only gets 2 naps plus a catnap.

I guess I'm also asking..how do you know when you should switch them from 3 naps per day to 2?? there's many posts regarding 2 to 1, but i havent seen any for 3 to 2.

Would you mind posting your routine for us?  maybe we can take a look at it and tweek it a bit.  Usually 45 minute naps mean they need more A time, but we'll take a look at your routine and see :)

I'm transitioning him onto a 4 hr EASY. So today we're on the first day.
E 7 6oz
A 7.30
S 8.30, heard him at 45min mark, within 10 min turned into a mantra cry, we think we know his mantra cry esp cuz he settles himself within a minute or so and it doesnt escalate. (his thumb i think is helping him settle too), i dont think we'll ever have to use the PUPD since he seems to have his own ways to settle and us going into the room seems to just frustrate him (arches back when picked up).
E 10 6oz
A
S 11.30, heard him at 35 min mark this time, after about 20 min of mantra in and out, i took a peek and his head was almost touching the left side of the crib....i decided i'd check sooner next time in case this happens again -- i guess he's gaining mobility even through the swaddle. After i fixed him, he still did that in and out crying thing like he's asleep the whole time....i went in at 1 to wake him to feed and he was happy as a clam...could he be having night terrors???
E 1 6oz
A watching me type
S will be at 2.30
E 4
A prob a walk
S catnap on walk maybe
E 6-7, depending on if he catnaps
A bath
S 6.30-7:30, again depending on catnap

I don't think a little one this young has night terrors, but I'm not an expert so I can't say for sure.  Really I think your ds is just learning how to sort out his day sleep.  This is common around this age.  When he wakes and does his mantra, does he eventually fall back to sleep?  If so, I wouldn't even worry about it, he's just teaching himself how to soothe. My ds does the same thing sometimes.

hi
sorry anne just gatecrashing.re the night terrors-he would be too young too experience them (the youngest they can start is around 10 months ).
my other thought is that he could be possibly teething.has the crying started recently?
