13 month old waking early again..is she ready for 1 nap?
« on: October 22, 2007, 12:21:51 pm »
Hi,
My DD is 13 months old,and we started the 2-1 nap transition early at 9 months. We've been doing a 20 minute nap in the am,and 1 3/4 to 2 hr nap in the afternoon, which finishes around 2:30 or just after depending on when she fell asleep for the nap.Anyway this has been going brilliantly,it solved the early wakeups, and she has been waking at 6:30/6:45,and she goes to bed at 6:45pm..so 12 hours nightsleep nearly.Well the past 3 or 4 mornings she has been waking at 6am,once a little earlier. She doesn't wake crying, she'll babble & chat away to herself, sometimes drift off back to sleep for 10 mins or so.I'm wondering if she's getting ready or is ready to drop that 20 min am nap or just needs to cut down on her day sleep a little.I'm going to get her up at the 1hr 40 mark today so she has no more than 2 hrs total daysleep, and see if that makes a difference. Also, she is cruising alot and just started walking with her toy car used as a walker,so maybe a developmental thing. There's so much going round in my head. She can do 4 1/2 hrs A time if she wakes at 6am,I basically put her down for her first nap at the same time every morning whether or not she has woken at 6am or 6:45am.It seems she has programmed herself to fall asleep at this time,so goes down always tired it seems,so it's hard to judge whether she could handle more A time to push her towards doing the 1 nap.
Would be grateful for any advice.

Thanks

shes around the right age to transition to 1 nap.DD started  to need just 1 nap at around 13-14 months.
I'd probably start shortening the AM nap by 5 mins increments and start bringing the PM nap earlier.
Its true that if she is going down for naps at more or less the same times every day her body is "programmed" for those times but doesn't necessarily mean she is tired enough for a really long nap IYKWIM.

Hi,
Thanks for your advice.I think I will start shortening the nap,do I do it in 3 day increments, say 15 mins for 3 days,10 mins the next etc.Is 2 hours enough for just the one nap once she gets there, say she does 11:45 to 1:45/2:00 with her usual bedtime of 6:45pm.Also with regards to A times, what are the usual A times for 10 mins and 5mins,would it be 1 hour for 10mins and 1/2 hr for 5 mins. This is such a difficult stage to go through with them isn't it?

I think the transition to 1 nap is the most difficult ::).It usually takes up to 2-3 months to fully transition.
When Sasha transitioned to 1 nap she was having 2.5hrs,which was the same amt of day sleep she had when she was on 2 naps.
once you've cut down the nap to 10 mins,5 mins etc its going to be a case of watching her tired cues.she'll probably be able to do at least an hour awake time.
