10mo weaning - how much formula??
« on: October 26, 2007, 21:33:27 pm »
Hi

I'm sure the answer to my question is located somewhere on this board but i can't seem to find it  ::) Sorry!  I'm just transitioning my 10mo over to bottles and i'm not sure how much he should be taking?  Our current routine is as follows:

7:00-7:30 Wake and feed
8:00 breakfast
9:15 sleep
10:00-10:30 wake and snack
11:45 lunch
12:30 nap 2hrs
2:30 milk and snack
4:00 dinner
6:30 bath, story, feed
7:00 bed

He's being having two large feeds morning and night and a brief feed at 2:30pm.  Today's our first day... cold turkey... and just wanted an idea in my head of how much approx he should be having.  He currently weighs 7.6 kg... small at birth and not really caught up.  Thanks, it's much appreciated  ;D

This is a helpful link in the F.A.Q section

If he's taking solids well, when he's taking three bottle feeds he should be getting about 20oz formula.  When you wean down to two bottles a day, I believe the recommendation is about 500 ml (16-17 oz) per day.
Because he's so small, I would ask your pediatrician just to make sure what kind of milk to have him on and how much he/she would recommend.

Thanks - we're a bit all over the place at the moment, few ounces here and there but it's getting easier!  We'll aim for the 500mls and play it by ear.... i always make up far too much formula, in the hope he'll drink more!  Spoke to our health visitor about it and she was very vague but have an appoint with the gp about his milk allergy so i'll ask then.  What age did your los drop down to two feeds?

Thanks for the advice, appreciate it  :)

Gosh, I don't really remember.  It's been such a long time with the older ones and Meghan isn't there yet.  Certainly before a year, but I always gave a little cup of milk with lunch.  I just didn't worry if they drank it or not.  The bedtime bottle was the last one to go and Elizabeth was about 15-16 months.

I can imagine how hard it is to remember back then... it probably all starts to blend together after a bit!!  The only reason i asked is that I have friends whose los drink full 200mls 4 x day  :o  I'll just let him decide and not make a big deal

Thanks again  ;D
