legumes
« on: November 13, 2007, 19:49:01 pm »
hi all, just wondering if anyone had problems with their LOs eating legumes. i've tried peas, green breans, and tofu and they all caused my DD to cry for hours on end (my guess is due to gas) and spit-up a lot. do you think that this is something she'll grow out of? i hope so! we're vegetarians and without beans, we're in dire straights :)

Not had any problems with our girls, but I do have a friend who has a legume and nut allergy, causes dermatitis and digestive complaints even with good old garden peas, so they don't suit everyone!

Hiya,

I only really gave Sophie well cooked lentils and tofu until she was 1, with some occasional peas and sweetcorn. Introduced more 'robust' beans later on.

I never really noticed a problem with beans, but when she did seem to have a problem with a food I just kept off it for a couple of months, then reintroduced it later. Now she doesn't seem to have a problem with any particular food group, except dairy.

Not sure where you live but in the UK I found the following books really useful -

sorry i can't see your links :( we're in NYC. i've been following the introduction schedule in the "super baby foods" book which recommended tofu, peas, and green beans at 7 months. oh well, she hasn't gotten hives or anything on her skin. just really bad stomach problems. so hopefully it's not so much an allergy as something she just needs to grow into. i'll try again in a few months.

I've been following Super Baby Foods too and haven't had an issue with Peas or Green Beans.  We started both when she was 6 months as the doc said to start veggies first and there weren't a lot of veggie options at 6 months.  We have not tried Tofu yet although it is waiting in the wings.

Do you think it's all 3?  Did you do the 4-day wait when introducing each of them with the same result?

Incidentally, here are the links.  There is a weird glitch on posting URL's

yep, did the 4 day rule on both peas and tofu and each time they elicited awful gas and crying for hours  :'( when the same thing happened with green beans i just stopped. i couldn't watch her be upset that much again. oh well. i'm hoping that i can try again. maybe around the end of the year.

Good luck!  Looks like my LO is just a teeny bit older than yours.  :)

Legumes are gaseous, so it doesn't entirely surprise me if she is having trouble passing it.
