20 months and started to wake at night!
« on: November 22, 2007, 14:25:26 pm »
Hi
my 20 month old ds has recently started waking up at night crying and wanting to come to our bed.
He has slept through the night pretty much from 4/5 months apart from when he's been ill and it's started to take a toll on dh and I as we both work full time.

He goes down no probs at 8pm, with a wind down, bath, bottle, bed routine, but he seems to wake at least twice a night, crying and pointing to to door indicating he wants to come our oour bed!
We go in there (no lights) and calm him down and put him back into his cot, but as soon as he hears us stepping out of the room he starts crying again.
I don't think this is SA or it would happen when we first put him to bed right?
Also I know he's not ill or too hot/cold so what could it be?

I hate to admit it, but we have given in on a few occassions and brought him into our bed just to get some sleep (where, he has slept like an angel).

His routine is
7am wake up
10.30am nap for 1 - 1.5 hours
4pm - sometimes a shortish nap
8pm bed

Any ideas of what to do? Could he be overtired? Should we try and put him to bed earlier?
Thanks in advance!

Hi there

Most 20mo's are on 1 nap so I think a routine change might help. If he " sometimes" does not sleep in the afternoon he is then awake for a long time before bedtime & that would cause overtiredness & night wakings.

I would start pushing out his morning nap until its close to 12ish - he should then sleep about 1.5-2hrs & bed would be around 7.30ish bedtime.

Try adding 15-20mins to his nap & in the meantime I would do an earlier bedtime to compensate for the overtiredness
