Illness & Weird Behavior Question
« on: November 20, 2007, 19:04:38 pm »
Mimi was pretty sick a few days ago.  We had a little bit of vomitting but mostly it was just a really high temp.  She seems fine now but having wacko behavior the past couple of days.  She's really only been sick once before so I kind of feel like I'm in unchartered waters.

She seems fussy/OT during the day and her naps have been shorter than usual.  Usually, OT doesn't really affect her naps that much though, it's always nights with this girl.  Her night sleep has been a nightmare the past 4 days or so.  Last night, she woke at 10:30pm and completely freaked out.  She was inconsolable and kept trying to bite, pull my hair, and grab my face.  :'(  She's taken a bite before when she's been frustrated but never anything like this.  This went on for 1.5 hrs until I started to get extremely upset.  At that point, dh thought something might really be wrong with her since she's never acted like this, so we went to the ER.  She, of course, stopped crying and started playing with everyone in the waiting room.  ::) The wait was long so we went ahead and came home.  After we got home, it took her an additional hour to fall back asleep.

I've had a similar hour long m/d today after a 45 min nap.  I managed to calm her down with some classical music and basically just rocked her to sleep.

She keeps doing the sign for eat but when I offer her different things, she gets frustrated and yells 'NO!'  I even took her into the kitchen and asked her to show me what she wants.  She just gets more upset.  Sometimes in the midst of these episodes, she'll say she wants something like a banana or cheese, then I get it for her just to have her throw it and continue with the tantrum.  She even bit herself at one point.  :o :'( So, I thought maybe it was her teeth (her 2 upper eye teeth just broke through) but she refused Tylenol/Motrin.  Today, I gave her an acetaminophen suppository in case she is in pain.  (yeah, that went over real well.   :P)  She still did the same thing so I don't think it's pain related.

Is she just really OT?  Her sleep routine usually looks like this:

0630 wake
1200-2/2:30 nap
7/7:30 sleep

TIA

Hi,
We've been going through something similar this past week with DD. She has had a bad cold and had HORRIBLE tantrums for 3 days and was often inconsolable and extremely fussy and clingy. On the 3rd day, I saw the tip of a molar coming through. I had been giving her Motrin for the fever she had along with her cold and apparently it didn't help her tooth pain much anyway. DD barely ate anything either while this was going on. My bet would be on teething pain, possibly coupled with being tired from being sick a few days ago. HTH and I hope things improve soon  :)

Thanks!  I hope it improves for you as well.

She handled her molars pretty well.  If it's teeth, these eye teeth are no joke.  :(  She acts so different with each set of teeth, it's hard to tell sometimes.

Zoey has been sick for weeks and last week was behaving VERY oddly.  She was crying and having meltdowns ALL day and also kept saying "num num" (meaning food) but would not eat anything.  She also started waking up at 5am for the day, and crying in her sleep.  She didn't have a fever and was no longer showing any signs of being sick at all, but was just a mess.  Finally, one night I was fed up with the whole thing and I took her to a doctor and found out she had an ear infection.  After a few days on antibiotics she is pretty much back to her normal self.  Maybe you should have Mimi's ears looked at.

Hi,

Just wanted to send you big hugs and say I hope things are better. I don't have anythign grand to say, just that we have strange meltdowns, tantrums at the fridge as well at times and it is always connected to teething or illness. I know that is no consolation as teething in particular is such a mystery till it happens, but just wanted to share.

Sharon.

She's been fine the past few days.  I think we're going to have another tooth break through soon though because she's drooling like crazy.  Only 3 more to go until the 2-year molars.  ;)

Glad to hear she's feeling better. Hopefully you'll get a break between these and the 2-year molars  :) We had a few good months in there without any teething issues and it was quite lovely!!!  ;)
