We're now getting through the regression that you told me about when doing PU/PD. Yesterday was really, really hard for him to go to sleep on his own for the first nap, he cried a while and I ended up patting him to sleep. The second nap was the same and I ended up holding him to sleep. The problem is that I don't want him to cry right now as he's finally starting to get better from his cold, and I feel that crying makes his throat worse and his nose more constipated. At night I didn't  even try PU/PD as I thought that I was only teaching him that if he cried hard enough, then I would just hold him to sleep. The night was pretty good as a surprise, he only woke up once for his bottle and that was it.

Today, I haven't tried to train either as he's still sick and I have either held him to sleep or patted him.

I guess I'll just have to wait until he gets better and then start all over!!! Which doesn't sound so good now that we were making so much progress...... Just when you think you get it, everything changes....

I'm sorry, but what's the meaning of "avatar". I even looked it up on a dictonary, but couldn't find what it meant.

Hi there

An avatar is the picture you represent yourself by on a forum - so your cute picture of your little man is your avatar.  I think it's a bit of a computer-geek word!

Now, in terms of the PU/PD - as you say, you really can't give in and rock him or hold him to sleep otherwise this will undermine all the good work you've done!   I think you are right that you will have to wait until he is better and then start over. Patting in his cot is fine - but don't start PU/PD until you know you are going to be able to stick with not holding him or rocking him to sleep.

It's hard when they are ill isn't it   :-\

I hope he is better soon

Thanks for the description of the avatar ;D

It is hard when they are ill, as then all your routine changes and when they're better you have to start all over again. How long does a cold usually last? His has been going on for more than a week. I think he's getting better, but the weather is so crazy these days here that the changes in temp won't let him get out of it.

Well, yesterday he woke up more than 4 times... It's so frustrating, I was just starting to get used to the idea of sleeping again  ;) Today I didn't use PD, but all I did was hold him without any patting or anything and he fell asleep immediately. I'll just try to keep my interventions as soft as possible and hope that when we start again with PD it's easier and he gets the grasp of it soon.

He was over the separation anxiety completely and now it returned worse than ever I believe. I don't know if it's his cold or another reason could be that my parents are in town and I leave him with them for the morning while I work from home. He's happy when I'm not around but when I get back, all he wants to do is cling to me for dear life. I'm not sure if this has to do with his resistance to fall asleep on his own now. ::) What a mistery!!! Every little detail changes everything.

Were you as lucky as to meet Tracy?

I'm not sure about the cold  :-\   Katie has only ever had one - which was last week - it lasted about 6-7 days.  I think they really vary!  If it's taking a long time to clear up maybe you could take him to the docs in case he has a secondary infection which needs antibiotics.

I know when Katie is ill she gets more clingy - don't we all!

No I never met Tracey unfortunately - I would have loved to!

Yes, we all do get clingy when we have an awful cold. He's better now, I didn't even have to give him any meds today, so I guess by Wednesday he should be fine and we'll be able to restart with the sleep training. I'll let you know how it goes.

I think Katie and Javier are almost the same age. Javier was born on January 12th, when was Katie born?

Ladies, My LO was born on January 28th, so they are all roughly the same age and throwing the same tantrums :D

Just to chip in a bit on Avatar. the word actually comes from Hindu mythology and means the 'reincarnated form'. It has been picked up the the internet geeks to represent ones online persona...its also used in 'Charmed' incase any of you follow it.

Interesting about avatar. You learn somethinig new every day!!!

Is there a birth club for Lo's on our age range? I haven't been able to find one and sometimes I have a lot of questions about all kinds of behavior, would be interesting to speak to other mothers going through the same. Wouldn't it?

Adriana.

Mukta - how interesting - I never knew that!

Adriana - yes there is a birth group for 6-12 month olds - think it's in the EASY section...
