Short and Inconsistent Naps for 13 Month Old
« on: December 10, 2007, 14:20:31 pm »
Would love guidance on naps for my 13 month old.  We dropped the morning nap about two months ago and now my darling son sleeps from about 7.00pm to 8.30am (believe me I'm not complaining).  The afternoon nap was averaging 2 to 2 1/2 hours, but lately he will sleep for only 45 minutes and wakes up screaming as if he's had a nightmare.  I've tried pu/pd unsuccessfully and don't want to fall into a trap of having him fall back to sleep in my arms (been there done that).  Major development this past week:  He's Walking!!  Here's our average day:

8.30 - Wake up
9.00 - Milk in beaker and breakfast
10.00 - Active playtime
11.45 - Lunch
12.45/1pm - Down for nap (sometimes he sleeps for 45 min and other times as much as 2 1/2 hours)
3.30 - Snack
5.15 - Dinner
6.15 - Bath
6.45/7 - In Bed (depends on how much he slept during the day)

Should I get him up at 8am to protect the mid-day nap?  He fights going down if I put him down either too early or too late, otherwise he goes to sleep without a fuss.

Many many thanks!!

I have been in a similar postition recently right down to DD starting to walk! She is on one nap which is usually 1˝ hours and then sleeps from 5.30/6.00pm until past 8am but I decided to wake her by 7.30am now so she can take her nap at midday and still get to bed at a decent hour.

Recently although I was being diligent about her morning A time I let the PM one slip (she was sometimes awake 5.5hrs) and we started getting crying at the halfway point of her nap, I thought nothing of it but then she started to take ages to settle for bed at night and was waking on her own earlier, around 7am and then bam 2 nights of NWs, I realise she was accumalating OT from the long A times before bed, luckily it was nipped in the bud but I would take your DS's screaming as an early sign of OT, especially if he used to sleep 2˝hrs. It could be  different for you but if he wakes after 45 mins and doesn't go back to sleep then maybe less than 5 hrs A time would be good just to keep the OT monster at bay  :)
