9.5 mo--not interested in solids
« on: January 06, 2008, 04:56:44 am »
I need help... my 9.5 month old really is not into solids. OK, she LOVES rice cereal mixed with breastmilk, but other than that she is not interested in anything pureed. I have tried finger foods too, and she will just pick them up but not put them anywhere near her mouth. She does not have a pincer grasp yet. She nurses 4x during the day and 2x at night. Any suggestions for what I can do? Should I give solids before nursing? Do I need to work on cutting out night nursings? Here is our routine:

Wake between 6-7 am
7 nurse
8/8:30 breakfast solids
9:20-10ish short nap (would like to extend)
11 nurse
12 lunch solids
1-2:30 nap
5:30 dinner solids
6 bath
6:20 nurse, stories
6:45 asleep
nurses 2x at night, usually around 11 pm and 3 am

Hi Joy,

Alice is 9 months one week, and we haven't fed her during the night since she was about 7 weeks or there abouts.  However we are bottle feeding and I think it might be different.  She is on a 4 hour routine and stays up for 3 hour stretches.  We do baby-led weaning and so have done finger foods from the outset and haven't done purees at all.  Keep trying different soft foods in spears that she can hold in her hand and come out both ends.  For example: banana, avocado, pear, roasted sweet potato, roasted courgette, roasted potato, roasted carrot/parsnip etc.  We milk feed Alice first and then an hour and a quarter later she gets her solids in her high chair.  She doesn't need a pincer grip to pick up this size of food, so that's OK.  Just keep offering it to her.  If she doesn't do puree don't start with it, just keep offering her finger foods.  I would be trying to get rid of the night feeds, certainly one of them, not sure how though, sorry.

You can pop onto the Baby-led weaning thread and people there might come up with more suggestions for you.

Sorry not to be a great help.

Thank you Pauline. She doesn't like to touch anything wet either (i.e. bananas or pears)... I will have to try some of your other suggestions.

Joy, try this link.  However, I haven't been all that successful posting links, so here goes.

https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=95978.0

If that didn't work. Go to Baby Food Recipes (the top link in Feeding solid food) and there is a thread Finger foods for young babies.

Or in the Baby led weaning thread No 3, page 8 there is a lot of advice for someone just starting out.

Hope that's helpful.

Hi, my LO is nearly 2years now! However I had an awful time trying to get her on solids, she only ever ate apple puree.
Just wanted to say it gets easier , they do eventually see the light. I spent many a day nearly in tears because she just wasn't interested.

What I remember worked for me was giving her solids first in the mornig before milk, have you tried weetabix with hot baby milk?
