struggling with routine
« on: December 21, 2007, 10:08:00 am »
Hi I have a 10month old son Jakson.  We have been on EASY since he was 4weeks old and loving it.  He has recently been fighting the sleep thing!  He has always been a really good independent sleeper until recently.  he stands in his cot and then will only sleep for the 45mins.
I am thinking he may be ready to change routines.
At the moment our routine is as follows
6.30am Wake and play in cot
7am Milk
8am Breaky
9am Sleep (used to be 1.5hrs, generally still is)
10.30am Wake
11am Milk
12noon Lunch
1pm Sleep
2.30pm Wake
3pm Milk
5.30pm Dinner
6pm Bath, story wind down time
6.40pm Milk
7pm Sleep

When I try to put him down at 9am he is still wide awake and will just stand in his cot and play.  I have tried putting him down contantly to no avail.  Should I be trying to keep him awake longer and give him a snack at say 9.30am and then sleep at 10am or something>  Then maybe drop the 11am milk feed and just have lunch with a top up milk feed in a sippy cup?
I am so confused.  The routine was working so so well, but I think my little man is growing up and wants to stay awake longer.  Is this what it sounds like to you?
Thanks in advance.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated so I am not going insane anymore!!
Shan

Yep, sounds like he needs some more A time in the am.   ;)
45 minute naps are usually an indication that it's time to extrend A time.

Am I reading your routine correct...is the last A time 4.5 hours long?
What you may want to start doing is evening out the A times since 2 hours in the am isn't long enough for him right now and 4.5 hours is a bit long. For a lo to be on only 2 naps they need to be able to stay awake 3+ hours each A time, however I wouldn't jump to 3 hours.  I would start lengthening the first A time by about 15 minutes or so.  If that isn't enough move it to 30 minutes more.

Isn't it amazing that once we have a good thing going, they grow up on us and need a change.  It's amazing how fast they grow up.

Hi,
We are doing ok thanks for asking us.
We have managed to solve our standing in the cot issue.  Thank god for that.
We have dropped the 11am bottle and giving lunch first and then the bottle after lunch.  Have totally dropped the 3pm bottle and giving a snack with water and then dinner at 5pm followed by his last milk feed at 6.30pm.
It is so confusing what we are supposed to be doing but this seems to be working at the moment.
Not sure when to drop the bottle after lunch though.
Thanks again
Shannon

Glad to hear you are doing ok.
As long as what your are doing is working for you all then it's right  :)
There is no 100% right or wrong. As long as you are happy and your lo is happy, sleeping well, eating well, etc.  then it's fine.
That's the great part about routine and baby whisperer.  Respecting yourself and your lo is key.
All babies are so different that it is hard to know what to do when that's when trial and error all come in to play and you just try somethings out and if they don't work you try something else  ;D

You are doing a wonderful job.
