14 month old frequent night wakings
« on: January 10, 2008, 19:10:27 pm »
My DD has never been a consistently through the night sleeper, but this has been by far the worst week since she was quite small.  Over Christmas holidays she consistently slept through the night, but she cut a tooth about a week ago and things have went downhill since then.  My DH is away this week and I work full time so that complicates things further.

Her schedule is:
7:00 am wake up
12:10 pm nap
2:10 pm wake up
7:00-7:30 pm bedtime

She goes down for her naps every day awake so I know she knows how to put herself to sleep.  The last week she has been up at least twice a night.  The first time is between 10:00-11:00 pm and then around 1:00-3:00 am.  I have been taking her out of her crib and giving her a bottle each time she wakes and then putting her back in her crib and she falls asleep on her own.  I am pretty sure that I have made the situation worse by doing that and have been told by many friends that because she is such a good eater she can't possibly be waking for an extra 2 bottles of milk.  As far as I can tell she is not currently teething and is healthy.  I have been reading about the WI/WO method and I am going to try and implement that tonight.

Does anyone have other suggestions?  Is something wrong with our routine or have we just started a bad habit when she was waking up due to teething pain and we now have to try and stop it?  Any advice?

TIA!

I think your routine looks great.

There could be a couple of possibilities
1-shes got more teeth on the move.wouldn't;t be that unusual as some teeth can take 2-3 months to come through.
2-It started off as genuine need for calories due to teething and is now a prop.If she is eating fairly well its more than likely its the latter.

Have you tried just offering water instead of milk?
How many ounces is she generally drinking at night?

Thanks for your reply!  Last weekend I did do water for a couple of nights, but for some reason I switched back to milk. ???  She has a 9 oz bottle before bed and then I have been giving her 2 7 oz bottles through the night.  She has a very, very large meal for supper plus yogurt and some cheerios before bed so I don't think she is waking due to hunger...

Am i correct in thinking she has 14oz during the night :o :o :o :o.

Did she go off her food when she was teething? Is it possible shes having a growth spurt?

I've got to log off now but could you post her whole routine inc meals.

Yep, you are correct 14 ozs through the night plus the 9 ozs before bed time!  This has only been going on for the last few nights.  She didn't eat as much when she was teething, but for the past 5 days her appetite is back up - actually she has more of an appetite than usual.

Her routine:
7:00 wake up
8:00 breakfast at daycare - toast or cereal + milk
11:30 lunch at daycare - varies day to day + milk
12:10-2:10 nap at daycare
3:00 snack at daycare - usually crackers & cheese + water
5:30 supper at home - whatever we make + fruit.  Last night she had a piece of banana, cheese, macaroni, chicken, peas, carrots (a very healthy portion of each) + water
6:30 container of yogurt and a handful of cheerios
7:00 9 oz bottle of milk
7:15 put her in her crib - sometimes she is already asleep, sometimes she is awake and will fall asleep on her own

When her tummy is full of solid food she will stop eating and throw what is left on her high chair to the floor, but come to think of it she has never refused milk in a bottle.... if I offer it to her she drinks the whole bottle ???  I thought a growth spurt is possible cause after a bottle I put her in her crib awake and she is able to put herself to sleep, but this is getting a bit ridiculous.... how long does a growth spurt usually last???  The portions she eats at daycare must be acceptable because they have never told me that they were concerned that she wasn't eating enough.

I am really leaning to the fact that I have spoiled her by the cuddles + bottles when she has woken up this past week.

Apologies for the late reply :(.just spent 3 hours trying to unblock a sink :-X.

Anyways growth spurt usually last about a week.Considering she is eating firly well during the day it could be she does need that milk at night.normally you'd start seeing a reduction in the amt she was eating during the day due to feeding at night.

So i'd be inclined to give her food when she wants it at the mo ,sasha could eat like a horse during growth spurts!!.something you could try is a more substantial bedtime snack and see if that helps her to go longer in the night.
