Better night sleep, worse day sleep!
« on: February 11, 2008, 13:20:25 pm »
Hello! Well, after 4-5 days of pd and wiwo, we got our 13 month old sleeping better at night. She went from waking every 3 hours to sleeping through the night or waking once (at random). BUT our daytime sleep is just completely out of whack. She went from napping twice, at 9 and at 1:30 for an hour to an hour and a half to not wanting a morning nap (even though she seems tired) and wanting a 2 hour nap at 12:30-2:30. I don't mind if she is really ready to switch from 2-1 but she seems tired in the morning. BUT, when I try to put her down (I have tried different times - she wakes up around 6:45am and I have tried to put her down at 8:30, 9, 10, but as soon as she gets in her crib she starts laughing and chatting and is WIDE AWAKE!). Then she goes down easily for her afternoon nap at 12:30 after lunch and stays down for 1hr 45 mins-2 hours but then by 6:30pm she is so cranky and tired. We put her in her bath at 7 and bedtime is 7:30.

Any advice? I don't know if she is really ready for the switch but she seems to just NOT want a morning nap. I have tried pd and wiwo but she just wants to play and is walking around her crib and chatting and cries when I leave (she can fall asleep on her own so I know it isn't this). I have even tried to just get her to have quiet time in her room with quiet music and toys. She stays in her crib for half an hour or so when I do this but doesn't sleep! I feel that her random nw might have to do with not enough daytime sleep. When she has two good naps she sleeps straight through the night. This is all a very new transition for us with the new better night sleep but I want us to nip any bad napping habits in the bud!

Thanks for any and all tips!

I'm certainly no nap expert but if your LO's night sleep has suddenly improved greatly she may not be as tired as she used to be in the morning. She seems to be handling that morning A time really well at the moment so you could just go with one nap and see what happens (go back to 2 at first sign of OT) but I would get her to bed earlier as that PM A time is the one that causes most EW and NW problems. I think when first switching 4½ hours is generally the longest they should go from waking from nap to bed but if your DD is tired and cranky at 6.30pm then I would advise having her bathed and in bed for then for at least a few days. My DD is 16 months and transitioned at 12 months and has a 5 hour AM A time but still only a 4½ PM A time (sometimes less if she has a short nap). I would still give her that quite time in her cot as it probably helps her get to her nap without getting OT.

HTH, Katt  :)
