Anyone sucesful with 3.5 hour easy for 4 month old?
« on: January 18, 2008, 21:55:14 pm »
My DS is almost 4 1/2 months. Up until last week he was on a 2 1/2 to 3 hour easy. he was STTN and doing great until around Christmas. Then he started waking several times a night. A friend told me about BWSAYP and the transitional scheudle to 4 hour EASY, so I've been working on that for a week now.  Today so far we were able to stretch to 3.5 hours on his first 2 feeds and 3 on the third.  His nighttime sleep seems to be getting a little better, too.

I'm wondering if it is OK to stop at 3.5 hour EASY even though Tracy says to go to the 4 hour schedule by 4 months.  Honestly I'm worried about my milk supply (I'm exclusively BFing) if I only offer each breast every 8 hours!

Has anyone been able to do this succesfully? My gut is telling me stick with 3.5 until we start solids, which will probably be soon as my baby is showing nearly all of the signs.

I think if it works well to do the 3.5 hour, then you can stick with it for awhile. I have seen on the boards that many babies who are bf don't get on a 4 hour routine until later.
We bottlefeed and my lo was on a 3.5 hour until maybe 5.5 months I think.
It's great that his nighttime sleep is improving! You also may want to stick with the 3.5 hour routine for awhile as I've learned on this board how you should really wait to introduce solids until 6 months. If things end up changing (your lo isn't hungry at 3.5hr, 45 min. naps) then you could maybe work towards a 4 hour routine.
Just my 2 cents...I'm definitely not an expert though, but I'm sure some others will have some great advice!

Most babies can handle a 4 hour easy by four months, however not all.  It is fine to go to a 3.5 hour routine while transitioning.  I think you will find that as your baby is able to stay awake longer he will naturally go towardsa four hour routine.  The AAP now advices starting solids at 6 months. I am pretty sure your little guy will be on a four hour routine before then.  Do you have reason to worry about your milk suppy?  It is truly amazing what the body can do. I wouldn't worry about it unless you think it is a problem already.  You might want to post on the bf forum for questions about that.  There are some wonderful ladies over there with a TON of experience.
If you want, post your routine and we can take a look.

Just to give you some reassurance....my lo couldn't handle the A time for a 4 hour EASY until almost 5 months.  She did the same for moving to two naps and one nap...did it much later than most other babies. ;)
It's all about following your specific lo and doing what's best for them.  :-*
