Long naps disrupting routine
« on: January 23, 2008, 08:51:51 am »
My 10 month old DD has recently had a cold which really knocked her about and has disrupted both sleeping and eating. She seems to be a lot better, still a bit chesty but much happier in herself, but we can't seem to get our routine back. She's having 2 x 2+ hour naps during the day, and I haven't wanted to wake her as she obviously is needing this to help her get better, but it's really disrupting her feed times. I'm just not sure when to try and get the routine back. Why would she still be taking these long naps if she's better? Should I wait a while still to make sure she's completely recovered before trying to reinforce the routine again?

She's also started waking more at night. While she was sick I gave her a feed when she woke as I thought she may have a sore throat and need some extra comfort, but again I'm not sure when I should start encouraging her to sleep through again and cut out the night feed. It feels a bit harsh to do it if she's not 100%, but I don't want to keep up bad habits if that's all it is.

If she's not completely better, I wouldn't worry about the extra sleep.  However, if she is better, it's possible she's getting too much sleep in the day, thus disrupting her night sleep.  Are you still feeding her at the NWs?  If you think she's still feeling poorly, I wouldn't make any drastic changes.  If you think she's better, you could start by waking her at the 2 hr mark with her naps and see what happens.  My dd is 10 mos and sleeps 3-4 hrs in the day and 12 at night, so it's possible your dd just needs a bit more sleep.   HTH
