need help confused about pat shhh for my short napper
« on: January 31, 2008, 21:11:49 pm »
this is my first post, i am having quite a bit of trouble with my 10 week old and napping-
i put her in her crib when sleepy and do pat shhh-most of the time she doesnt fcry and i wait til i think she is in deep sleep and gradually let up on pat shhh and walk out-she has a sound machine that i have going
all is good until about 20 minutes later- (sometimes 25 or 15  but always under 30 min.) and she wakes up
and usually does one of 2 things:

1.goes back to sleep after i pat shhh but again wakes up after 15-20 min. and i start all over and cycle continues for next 45min or until next feed.

2.never goes into deep sleep but just stays in kind of a drifting off as i pat shhh, eventually after 45 min. of this it is time for her to eat so i end the nap.
2 main questions
Has pat shh become a prop?
and
I thought i was supposed to soothe her with pat shhh but leave her JUST BEFORE she goes to sleep and let her drift off on her own but go back to her if she cries in order  to support independent sleep (which I read in 1st BW book)
and then I read here in tracy's sleep interview that I should stay with her doing pat shhh through all 3sleep cycles, usually takes 20 minutes. Now I am confused!
Please post back just to let me know i am doing the right thing here.
Thanks.

Hi and welcome!! I'm not an expert on this at such an early age as I only discovered BW when my ds was 3 1/2 months. I think independent sleep will come only when the naps are really settled-at this stage I'd continue doing shh/pat through the 3 sleep cycles and get her into a really deep sleep. HTH!

In the beginning, you are to stay and shh/pat through all sleep cycles, then slowly decrease the time you shh/pat.  Some babies don't need shh/pat through all the cycles.  I never did shh/pat through all the cycles and ds still learned to fall asleep independently

This is a confusing issue. My son makes it more confusing because sometimes he needs it through all the stages, sometimes just the first 20 min, sometimes just the 45 min transition time, and sometimes the 45 min mark all the way to the end of the nap. I can't figure it out either. But somebody on here told me not to worry about doing so much shh/patting at this age, it's okay if they need the extra help. Once he seems to not need you so much try not doing it as much, maybe just the first nap of the day and see how he does.
