Help - should i tackle nap issue at same time as dummy removal?
« on: February 01, 2008, 06:35:00 am »
Hi, I'm on day 2 of removing the dummy using PU/PD and shush and pat first of course. My question is aside from needing dummy to go to sleep she also is a short napper during the day. I realise these can be linked but I wonder should I be trying to extend nap times now or just focus on teaching her to resettle herself first. Because the going to sleep thing is improving but the mid wake up during daytime naps can take 40 mins to try and get her back to sleep with PU/PD to no avail and I wonder whether this is too much all at once and I should focus on getting her off the dummy first. but then I also realise the need to be consistent. Should I get her up after the 45 min nap if she won't resettle to reward her for settling without the dummy in the first place? and then focus on extending the naps once shes off the dummy and has learnt to settle herself? Advice please. Also shes 4 months old and I have started having a 15 minute wynd down before naps.

She is on 4 hour routine
7am feed
7:15am-9am activity
9-11am sleep but always wakes throughout used to get her to resettle with dummy sometimes
11 feed
11:15-1pm activity
1pm - 3pm sleep but wakes often as above
4:30 - 5:30 sometimes has nap in swing
bath etc
6:45 feed
7pm bed has been waking regularly until dream feed wanting dummy
10:30 dream feed
usually only feed once at night with 1-2 other wakings but no feeding

If I were you, I'd do both at once.  It's like wiping the slate clean :)  Have you tried extending A times a bit as 45 minute naps could signify being under tired.  Don't push it too much because that could result in 30 minute naps and an OT baby!!  Also, pu/pd can sometimes overstimulate babies, especially at 4 months old.  Have you tried shh/pat before?

yes I only try pu/pd when ssh/pat won't work but i certainly feel like its got the point where she just cries harder until I pick her up. Even when I am leaning so far over i am basically in bed beside her patting her back and shushing in her ear she just doesn't care until I pick her up. It's day 3 and I feel like giving up, its not getting any easier. the only thing that is stopping me going back to the dummy is that the thought of all this would be for nothing.

Last night was the worst she didn't have an afternoon nap so was overtired but had a 40 min nap at her bedtime of 7pm then couldn't get her back to sleep until 10:30!!

When does it start getting easier??

Well, I wish I had a great answer for you on when it starts getting easier, but from what I have witnessed, things get much better with paci weaning by 1 week.  For me, ds only had a couple of rough days and I think it is easier for them when they are younger.  Consistency is key, just keep that in mind when you are ready to give up.  I did have some thoughts of giving up when I weaned the paci, mostly in the middle of the night when I just wanted to sleep!  But I am so glad I didn't give in!!
