Since the time change LO wants to stay up to 9:00 PM!!!
« on: March 13, 2008, 15:18:56 pm »
Since the time change my LO has been waking at 7:30 AM... great uhh?  He takes his nap at 12:30, and usually wakes within an hour and a half, however we have had the hardest time getting him to bed, he has been falling asleep around 9:00 PM.  We've been trying to get him in the bed within 5.5 hours of his waking from his nap, when that wasn't working we stretched it to 6 hours, but he's still fighting us.  Any idea's on how to get back on his schedule, or should we just go with it?

Thanks for any input!
-Lola

How old is he Lola?

Could be that his nap is pushing out his bedtime... before the time change was he falling asleep around 8pm?

I'm having the same problem -- but my 27 month old DS is staying up even later -- closer to 11 PM some nights.  He also has a stuffy nose which is making it hard for him to sleep, but I don't know what to do.  He is napping ok, but he just won't fall asleep at night.  Luckily, he's happy.  I put him to bed by 8:00 tonight (he woke up from his nap at 2:45) and he is still awake (it's now 10 PM).  He's just been in his crib talking to himself the whole time.

His old routine was:
Wake 7:30
Nap 12:30 -2:30
Bed between 7:30 and 8:00

Now he's sleeping a little later in the morning because of the time change, so his nap and bedtime are pushed back accordingly, but this is getting ridiculous.  Does this mean he's ready to give up naps?  He seems so tired at nap time.

Please help!

You might need to wake him up in the morning about 30mins earlier and nap earlier so that his day goes back to normal and not pushed too forward. Also try shortening the nap to 1.5hrs.... toddlers need about 12hrs of sleep around this age so if he's napping 2hrs and sleeping 10hrs at night (say from 10-8) then it might be all that he needs.

I don't think he is ready to give up naps but the nap might be too long. Try 1.5hrs for a few weeks and try a longer windown routine. If he's still taking a long time to fall asleep at night then try cutting the nap to 1.25hrs for a few weeks to see if that helps

My dd was doing 1.25hr nap and a little over 10.5hrs at night.

Good luck

If everything is off by an hour, then it probably is the time change and like pp mentioned, just wake them up a little earlier.

We're actually LOVING the time change, but our kids were going to sleep by 6:30 or 7 and waking us between 5:30 or 6:30 most mornings, so the sleep in past 7 is HEAVEN and we're trying to prolong the shift back as long as we possibly can :)

Thanks for the advice, I think we will try the shorter naps, and see how it goes.  But I do have to admit, I do love the 7:30 wake up!  LOL  So 12 hours is plenty of sleep then I will stop worrying so much!  One good thing about the time change is there is plenty of outside play time in the evenings!   :)  Thanks again!

Since daylight savings started here my son isnt going to sleep until 8.30/9pm. I wa son here asking advice too but even with only an hour nap and making wind down longer....he still is going to sleep at 8.30 ish. Im not battling it now as he sleeps until 8am...... ;D cant complain about that.!!

Unfortunately daylight savings ends here in NZ in a few weeks.....boooooo!! So im thinking it will be back to earlier bed and earlier wake ups....BIGGER BOO ;)

Id say if you tweak his nap and it doesnt change not to worry about it........they sleep when they sleep....

Good luck

My problem is similar. Daniel will be 3 in July and has been in a big boy bed since November. Sleep hasn't really been a problem in the new bed, transition went well. We are expecting another baby in May. No major milestones or drastic changes except the time change. His old routine was -

Wake 7 am
Nap 12-130 (1.5 is the longest he would nap)
Bed 8 pm

Now it's
Wake 530 am
Nap 12-130
Bed 9 pm

We still try the same wind down routines and try to get him to be out by 8  like before but he just keep coming out of his room, coming up with all sorts of things to do/say to stay awake, and even if he just stays in his room he still won't fall asleep for an hour or more. Last night it was 930 but he did stay asleep this morning until 645 am but seemed still tired when he got up.

Any suggestions?

Do you think maybe he's ready for a shorter nap? Maybe you could try waking him up 1.25hrs into the nap to see if he'll fall asleep sooner and maybe sleep more in the morning...
