How do you know if baby wants to wean?
« on: March 17, 2008, 13:04:32 pm »
Hi everyone,
i had been breastfeeding exclusively for nearly 8mths since my 9mo DS was born. I only started to bottle-feed him (1 feed a day) on formula a month ago.

Recently i had to increase the no of bottle feeds as DS refused to latch on for his afternoon milk feed. Now he only latches on in the morning. The other 2 milk feeds are formula.

Is this the sign that he wants to wean? hope someone can provide some insight.

thanks very much!
Nic

Self-weaning before the age of 1 is highly unlikely.  I am right in reading that you are only feeding 3 times a day..
the first is breastfeeding and the other 2 are from bottles.  What times are you feeding.

Can you let us have a look at how many feeds and when you are doing them.. might give better insight.

Are you wanting to reinstate the afternoon feed with breast and try to ditch the bottle?

Sorry, more questions, but hoepfully it might help find some answers for you.

Alex

Hi Alex,

thanks for your reply.
here's the feed times
630am - breast (both sides)
7am - breakfast (solids)
1130am - Lunch (solids)
230pm - milk feed (5oz - bottle)
530pm - tea (solids)
630pm - milk (5oz)

I'm not particular if DS wants to continue with bottle. I really just want to be sure that i'm getting his cues right. I too know that it is rare for a baby less than 12 mths to wean automatically.

Any insight?

Really thanks very much!
Nic

Self weaning is unusual before age 1, unless they are more interested in a bottle. If you don't want them to lost interest BF as much as possible. Even if you have cut out feedings you can get them back if you want... supply and demand is how BF works. Many kids lose interest because the bottle/cup is easier than nursing.
