Is the dreamfeed supposed to be a full feed?
« on: May 28, 2012, 14:11:20 pm »
Hi there,

I have a 20 week old DS who is BF during the day and gets a bottle just before BT and then at the DF. He was rejecting/refusing the bottle the last couple of weeks but seems like he may be back on track again (fingers crossed).

He feeds every 3/3.5hrs and he gets his dinnertime feed at 530pm, has a bath etc and gets, I guess what would be, a top up bottle around 645. Before when my milk supply was non-existent he would take about 5oz at BT and DF now he takes barely 3oz. I can understand why he takes 3oz at BT becuse his dinner feed would have only been about 1/1.25hrs ago.

My question then is when he gets the DF should he be taking a full feed of 4-5oz? He generally stops at 3oz...and then usually sleeps til 530/6am. He won't take more than that so can't really force feed him...he's a small guy and in the 10th percentile for weight but my DD wasn't all that big either. Otherwise he seems happy and is developing accordingly.

Just want to figure out why he's reduced his FF when he was doing well with them. I think those 2 bottles contributed to some of his weight gain and if he'd still be fdrinking the 5oz he would have gained a bit more than he did this time around. Thanks for your input!

The df seems to vary widely among babies -- some seem to take full feeds and others just take enough to tide them over.  You might try adjusting the timing of the df so it is a little bit earlier or later and see if you can get him to take more.  It does sounds like he's right on track though.
