10 month old - 30 min naps..... HELP!!
« on: May 21, 2008, 08:32:39 am »
Hi,

my son almost 10 month old and used to nap for 1h and 15, but 5 weeks ago he shortened his naps to 30 min. He's tired, yawns etc. He used to sleep 11 1/2 h at night, but he's sleeping 11 now, sometimes 11 1/2 or rarely 12.
This is our current routine (I give him solids first because he still has reflux and brings up more food if I give him milk first, especially in the morning)

6.30am awake
7am solids
8am bottle
9.30 sleep
12am solids
1 pm bottle
2/2.30pm sleep
5.30 pm solids
6.30 bath
7pm bottle, quiet time. books, cuddles
7.30pm in bed

I tried W2S to lengthen naps and he slept for 1h and 10min this morning, 40 min this afternoon (unfortunately I wasn't in his room at the right time). Will try again tomorrow. Also tried to shorten 1st awake time but he wants to play...

Since he's tired I was thinking about an earlier bedtime for 3 days, let's say 7pm. What do you think?? Any other suggestion?

thanks
giovanna

30 minute naps generally mean OT.  What time does he wake from his morning and afternoon naps?  For his age, he 'should' have 3-4 hours of A time.  I agree that an earlier bed time is the way to go, but I'd try to maybe shorten his A time a bit too! :)

Hi!  This is my first post, but I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone.  My DS was a great napper until 6 weeks ago, when he went to 45 minute naps.  This week, we are down to 2 thirty minute naps.  Yuck!  He is 10 months and has 3 hours of A time.  I think that he is just cumulatively OT.  He already goes to bed at 7 pm, wakes at 5:30/6 to BF, and then back to sleep until 8 am.  I'm thinking that maybe I need to wake him up a strict time, like 7 am.  Maybe he's not tired enough to take a long nap?  I don't know...

Hi Marensmama,

he usually wakes up around 10am after the 1st nap and around 3pm after the second nap.
Awake time is 3 h, then 4 h and 4 1/2.

I put him down at 7pm last night, but can't tell if it worked because he had a cold and woke up several time during the night, with an early morning waking and and early nap (1 h 15min).

Thank you for your support

Hi again. I would definitely shorten that last A time at least.  30 naps do indicate that he is OT, and the A time should be decreased if he's had a short nap.  There's no magic number of minutes, but if he's had a short nap in the morning, look for his tired cues and put him down earlier accordingly. Do the same thing for each EASY cycle until he's more well rested.  The important thing to remember is to go by his cues and not the clock.

HTH! :)

Chinacat, sorry I missed your post there.  Without seeing your routine, it's tough to say, but it sounds like he was ready for more A time when he started taking the 45 minute naps, and since those aren't restorative he got OT and now takes 30 minute naps (which means OT).  I'd pay good attention to his sleepy cues and put him down the moment you see those appear and once he's more well rested, concentrate on getting his A time to between 3 and 4 hours.

HTH! :)

Hi Marensma,

early bedtime seems to work. My son is now happier and plays independently for a long time (never happens when he hasn't had enough sleep). Anyway, I've been paying attention to his tired cues and he has been sleeping from 30 min to 1 hour.
This morning he was up for 4 1/2 hours and slept for 45 min.
One day I had to go out, he wasn't tired AT ALL, I did our nap routine and after 15 min he was happily asleep and slept for 1 hour. Mind you he had been up for 3 1/2 hours. One day he refused to have his morning sleep ....
Not sure, but do you think he's starting to switch from 2 to 1 nap????

thanks!
g
