Afternoon A time not present
« on: May 21, 2008, 20:10:09 pm »
Anyone have suggestions if after the afternoon nap, baby does not want activity time, he just wants to go back to sleep.  Do I skip activity/trying to arouse him or put him back to nap?

How old is he?  How does he sleep at night?

He is 10 weeks old; he goes to bed b/t 8 and 9, gets up around 1230 or so and again around 4am.

During the day, he usually wakes crying but will give him a bottle, he is somewhat sleepy during feeding, but is easily aroused after burping.  Then I usually talk to him and he is all jolly for A time; but after the afternoon nap, ending around 4pm or so, I feed him, and he is difficult to arouse, and when I do try to wake him, he cries. I don't want him to think it's in the middle of the night, b/c we feed and go right back to bed, occas. we'll change him.
He is throwing me a curve ball!!!
I was also going to see if moving him to a 7 or 730 bedtime would make any difference.

could you post the times things happen, like feedings and naps and such?

I am sorry, I'm new at this....
This is today:
woke 1230am:  took 3 oz formula
0400am:  3 oz formula; stirred in bassinet until 6am; got him up and he catnapped until 7am
0700am:  2.25 oz; awake for one hour, napped until 9am, held him off of a bottle until 10am for 3 hour EASY
1000am:  3.5 oz; awake for 1.5 hours, then down for nap, awoke 1230, held off again intil 1pm
1pm:  2.5 oz; awake for one hour, up at 345
345pm:  4 oz and wanted to go back to sleep right away

Most other days are similar, but when out and about it's hard to know.  The days I am out and about, he gets what he gets, which is mean, but what else could I do???? ???

We have been having a hard time with a schedule for him, he had been wanting to feed every 1.5-2hours and was only taking 2 ounces at the most, so I have gotten to the point where he needs a schedule and am trying to hold him off for 3 hours; and am trying to be better about the consistency of the EASY plan:  I have not been napping him in bassinet first thing in the morning or later at night, but his late morning/early afternoon naps he has been in his own space.

He does have reflux, on meds.  He also has 1/2 tsp oatmeal cereal to one ounce of formula.

Is there anything else I can do to extend his middle of the night sleeps, he goes about 3.5-4 hours at this time, or do you think that is appropriate for his age, 10 weeks?

was he a premie?

My DD has reflux as well.  what meds is your DS on?  I am not sure the amounts your DS should be having in each bottle, but I am pretty sure it is more then 2-3 oz.  have you tried doing an EAES kind of routine?

He was 5lbs 15 oz.  He is now on Prevacid 7.5mg 2x/day.  We tried the zantac and reglan without good effects.

I never thought of doing that.  So would that be still a 3 hour EASY/4 hour EASY or something else???

I thought they increase 2 ounces every month until they hit a plateau of like 24 ounces (or something like that).  I don't know though.  That's why I am having a hard time getting food into him, obviously I can't force him to eat!  I wish he would eat more to go longer b/w feedings.

I would tryt he EAEAS thing.  you feed him and then do a short activity and then feed again.  do a diaper change then to bed.  see if this will help and then you can gradually increase the first one until the second disapears.

what does your DS do when you wake him in the evening?

How many ounces does your DS take?

Well, I don't put him in his bassinet in the evening.  I usually put him in his swing or bouncy chair, because it is a short nap, I am leaving the "bed" for long sleeps or bedtime So, anyway, he just wakes to noises that are made from my 3 year old or the dog; is that the wrong thing to do, do you think? You would think I would remember so much from my older son, but I don't...

I notice that your DS is almost 2 months, what do you do for her?

I BF, so I have no idea on amounts.  DD doesn't sleep well during the day.  when we can she is in her bassinet for all naps.  we don't have a swing, only a bouncer and she wont sleep there.  but it is hit or miss for naps.  how long are your lo's naps?

Things are actually going much better.  I have kind of figured out when he is starting to get tired, so I quickly take him, swaddle him and put him in his crib (I just put the crib up this weekend, and he seems to have longer naps...I don't know if crib matt. is more comfortable or more room to look at things other than a white bassinett 5 inches away from his face) He has even extended his sleeping time at night by a little.  When he gets up, I feed him, change him, and then play, he has actually lasted 2 hours, but was OT by the time I tried to lay him down.  So I go about 1.5 hours and he will sleep for 1.5-2 hours, soundly.  He is doing well though.
I also put his humidifier on in his room for "white noise" and I think that also helps him sleep soundly b/c no noises startle him as the noise blocks it all out.
Anyone questioning putting your lo in a crib, out of their bassinett????  Have you looked at how thin the pad is that is in the bassinett???  And how small of an area they have (not that they need alot)...but to even look at something, their eyes must go buggy b/c the side is so close....switch them!!!  I am so glad I did...he seems to like it alot better.

Thank you all for your input, it is really appreciated.
