Alcohol and breast feeding
« on: May 31, 2008, 21:16:30 pm »
Grrrrrrrrrrrrr

I saw a friend/aquaintance yesterday and in the process of chatting told her i was looking forward to going out that night for a meal with my friends and NO KIDS!!!!! I also said i was looking forward to having a couple of glasses of wine.
Oh my god you would have thought i'd said i was going to string the baby up and leave him dangling from a tree with a bacardi breezer while i was out!!!! She actually told me i "couldn't" have a drink while i'm breastfeeding.  >:(
So now i'm starting to doubt myself............. Is it ok to have the odd drink? (I mean like 2 glasses of wine over 4 hours, not a whole bottle of vodka) Or is she right and i've just booked a one-way ticket to hell for polluting his milk. Does the alcohol go into the milk?

lol sorry i have to laugh coz of the way you re told that!!!!

I was told when i was BF that as long as i didnt go downing bottles of the clear stuff or massive amounts, the odd glass or two spaced out (as you said) would do no harm  :-*

Heck its hard enough being a milk machine without losing your right to live too!!  :P

she should be ashamed of herself making you feel like that sweetie  ::)

lol...that cracked me up!  Since you won't be downing a bottle of vodka..below ought to make you feel a little better about drinking a couple glasses of wine.

Have a GREAT time!

Guidelines

    * Current research says that occasional use of alcohol (1-2 drinks) is not harmful to the nursing baby. The American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Drugs classifies alcohol (ethanol) as a “Maternal Medication Usually Compatible With Breastfeeding.”
    * Many experts recommend against drinking more than 1-2 drinks per week.
    * It is recommended that nursing moms avoid breastfeeding during and for 2-3 hours after drinking (Hale 2002).
    * There is no need to pump & dump milk after drinking alcohol, other than for mom's comfort -- pumping & dumping does not speed the elimination of alcohol from the milk.
    * Alcohol does not increase milk production, and has been shown to inhibit let-down and decrease milk production (see below).
    * If you're away from your baby, try to pump as often as baby usually nurses (this is to maintain milk supply, not because of the alcohol). At the very least, pump or hand express whenever you feel uncomfortably full - this will help you to avoid plugged ducts and mastitis.

In general, if you are sober enough to drive, you are sober enough to breastfeed. Less than 2% of the alcohol consumed by the mother reaches her blood and milk. Alcohol peaks in mom's blood and milk approximately 1/2-1 hour after drinking (but there is considerable variation from person to person, depending upon how much food was eaten in the same time period, mom's body weight and percentage of body fat, etc.). Alcohol does not accumulate in breastmilk, but leaves the milk as it leaves the blood; so when your blood alcohol levels are back down, so are your milk alcohol levels.

Always keep in mind the baby's age when considering the effect of alcohol. A newborn has a very immature liver, so minute amounts of alcohol would be more of a burden. Up until around 3 months of age, infants detoxify alcohol at around half the rate of an adult. An older baby or toddler can metabolize the alcohol more quickly.

Go let your hair down you are allowed to have 1-2 drinks. I have been told by my Doctor that he reccomends BF mothers have 1/2 pink ginuess a day just to keep there Iron supply up. I can not drink guiness it makes me feel ill just by having the drink touch my lips. Injoy your meal and go for it, you deserve it and tell you mate that made you feel like this you can have drink but not loads as long as you last drink is 1-1.5 hours before you give your LO the next BF.

Praise be! The sky has not fallen, social services have not been round and my son is fine. (I have a slight headache but that's beside the point!)

It was great!
So strange though, going out with a tiny handbag, instead of my usual klampett-style accessories!
