fast let down - causing wind
« on: June 02, 2008, 23:45:51 pm »
Hi my LO is 14weeks old and is going through bad nap stage - which I know is very common and one day it just fixes itself! However short naps coincided with sleeping through the night which in turn leaves me with very full breasts in the morning. I have a painful quick let down at the best of times and lately he is coughing and spluttering and his bib is always soaked from milk pouring out of the sides.
I burp him halfway through and at the end but then about 30-45mins later he starts fussing and crying, I think its tired signs but wondering if it is more wind pain as when I go to pop him to bed he usually has a sicky spill and then is crying after all the wind down time once in bed.
Just wondering if anyone with fast let down has experienced wind problems effecting naps? His night sleep is great - maybe as my milk is a lot slower then too.
Also any tips on natural things that may help wind thank you

I had super fast let down with both of mine -- and they would often spit up during naps because they were overfed.  You can always try putting him on the breast until you have a let down and then pulling him off for a minute until your milk flow slows down a bit.  That will at least keep him from the coughing and sputtering a little bit.  You can catch the milk in a towel (I always kept a burp cloth handy to soak up a lot of milk and did lots and lots of wash!)  The big plus is that it evened out with both of mine around 3-4 months.  Hope that helps!

Hi, have you tried winding him 30 mins after a feed? I know when zane was younger i would have to burp him a little after a feed. And pp is right it normaly settles at about 4 mths so not long now hopefully.

Do you feed him off both breasts at one fed?  I had really fast let down and my lactation consultant suggested feeding him two feeds on one breast and then switching to the other side so the let down is more manageable for the lo and maybe not cause as much gas.  Or you could try to pump before you feed or 5 min to take off some of the pressure and them lo would get a slower letdown....
These worked for me, but I also had to give my lo simethicone gtts for the gas he was having b/c burping was never enough...
Good luck!
