My Whole Foods is far also for me, but the Shortening does stay well. Not cheap! I get the Whole Foods brand sandwich bread. It's the only one I've found that's a sliced bread with no milk or soy in it. Costco's brand of tuna doesn't have soy in it, but I get stuck for lunches too. Often I just eat salads or leftovers. I use both the Baker's semi-sweet and unsweetened (for brownies) chocolate. I just ate a cube of the semi-sweet for dessert and I've made cookies with it. It's so rich. Glad I could help. I've never met anyone who has done a similar diet and all my friends think I'm crazy, but  it's worth it in my mind (and my son's ped. is super supportive now). I figure when he gets older, I'll have to cook this way anyway, so start now!

my mom thinks I'm crazy too.  she keeps asking me if it is really worth it.  I sometimes wonder myself.  but I thint hat once I get into the groove of coking this way it will get easier.  the hardest part is the sweets.  I thought the semisweet bakers had milk in it, I'll have to check it again to be sure.  I be sure to post your recepies for stuff on the mspi recepie thread.  I'm going to be working on getting a lot of my recepies on here to share.  do you have a list of eat out places and foods that you can get???  I'm workign on that list as well.

What symptoms did you see in your LOs?  What changed with the MSPI diet?

DD got diagnosed with Reflux and sent to a GI specialist.  she was throwing up once or twice a day.  so the GI thought it might be allergies.  tests came back negative but since I have been off dairy and soy she has been SO much happier and less gassy and she hasn't thrown up since.  Her sit up amounts are a lot less too.  so I think she has intolerances to these things.  I will start adding in a few things once she gets to be past 3 months old.  reflux peaks at that age so I don't want to make her worse then she already will be.  

I think the thing that changed the most was her comfort level though.  it has been amazing to see the difference in her.  It hought she was spirited touchy but I took the test again a couple days ago and she was textbook spirited so It hink she is doing really well with it.

Mel--what made you decide to cut out soybean oil and soy lecithin too?  I thought the list of things to avoid said those were okay.  :)

the GI specialist we went to see said to take everything soy out and then we will add things back in slowly.  the soybean oil is the first thing to be added back in, but we aren't doing it until she is over 3 months old because she has reflux and it peaks at that age.  I wish I could do it sooner as it is in everything!

Wow, I had no idea that the dairy intolerance or allergy could go this deep when BF'ing.  My dd had really bad wind/gas after she was born, so the first thing I tried was cutting out dairy - which worked.  It is mainly the standard things like milk, cheese, yoghurt, creams etc. (I can drink lactose free milk), but sometimes she still gets a little bit of wind and I wonder what it could be when I know that I haven't eaten much dairy (well, what I thought wasn't much) and had no idea that it could be in almost every food around!!!  I accidentally up'ed my dairy intake a few weeks ago and dd got really bad wind for about 2 weeks, so I know that even though she is past the 3 month mark, she is still just as sensitive when I eat it.  I'll check out the MSPI recipes as it would be interesting to see if this makes anymore of a difference.  Just cutting out the standard stuff gave us a much happier baby in general so who knows - maybe she'll actually be an angel baby (though I suspect she will still be very spirited) ;)

Melissa, I have thought the same as you - about it being worth it, as I love dairy in general.  I definitely know in my heart that it is because I had trouble bf'ing the first time with ds and had to give up completely by 6 months, I would love to make it to at least 12 months this time and I think, it really is only 12 months of my whole life to give something up just for her.  I think it's hard, but worth it (especially since formula could also lead to just as many problems).  Also, I feel much better in myself not eating dairy.  I think I have always had a slight intolerance to milk at least, but since cutting out dairy, I don't feel bloated and the weight is getting a lot closer to pre-pregnancy...  When I accidentally ate a bit of dairy a few weeks ago, I noticed that I also had really bad/painful wind too  :o after not eating it for a few months

also, remember that by keeping your lo free from an intolerance you are increasing the lo's chances of not developing allergy or lifelong intolerance. Good job.
