noticed changes in my XBM
« on: June 02, 2008, 09:56:47 am »
I've been expressing at 11pm while my DH gives our lo her DF but i've recently noticed a change in the make up of my XBM... there used to be 3 distinct layers. At the bottom of the bottle was a thin-ish layer of the watery stuff (prob about 1/5th of the milk), then there was a much thicker layer of white milk (looks like semi-skimmed) and then a VERY thin layer (prob 3mm at most!) of the very creamy stuff.

However, just recently there seems to be very little distinction bwtn the watery stuff and the semi-skimmed stuff??? It all looks incredibly watery with just a really thin layer of cream??? I've also noticed that she tends to do what I'd call a screech (it's a bit of a cross btwn a cry & a squeal - only way i can explain it) alot after she comes off, could this be related??

She started to come off quite quickly, screech, then I'd be able to get her on for another short period before she'd pull off again and screech. She seems to be almost tugging/pulling at my nipple and seems quite frustrated. Could it be that i've got a slow letdown and she's getting fed up and doesn't want to work for it?? I don't tend to let her get too worked up like this before offering her the other breast and we repeat the same messing about. I feed approx every 3.5h and give her a 2oz formula top up after her all feeds except the 1st feed of the morning and the 1 night feed. I only moved to 3.5h feeds about 1w ago as feeds had reduced to a ridiculous 4m (that's inc both sides, not each!!). She'll now stay on a min of 6m but usually 10m+

I have to "top up" after every feed... have done since about 4wks as lo lost lots of birth weight and wasn't regaining (probs with latch & milk supply). Bit paranoid as had HUGE problems for 1st 10wks BF'ing, it was a real struggle before it seemed to finally settle down a bit and I was able to reduce the formula top ups slightly.

Really hoping someone can give me some insight/advice :)

Not sure how old you LO one is, but it sounds very very similar to an episode that Kitty went through at about 3mo. On, off, on off, cry, lasting about 5 mins max - it was awful. Settled down, however whatever it was has reduced my supply, so am now giving top up as well. Hopefully it will just be a stage and that she should settle down again.
I too am extremely paranoid about Kitty not getting enough as also had loads of problems BFing in the beginning. Hopefully this is just a difficult stage.
Not sure about the 3 layers, I only ever have 2 that I can see.
Hang on in there, hopefully it will get better
xx

My lo is similar age, 14w... maybe it's something they go through?? Pleased to hear things sorted themselves out for you. I'm trying not to get TOO worried about it at the moment as that'll only be counterproductive to my milk supply I'm sure ;)

Since posting this I sang through the last 2 feeds and she definitely seemed calmer and stayed on for longer too!!??! Who knows whether it was the singing or just coincidence but I think I'm going to stick with it for now... LOL  :D  She even came off smiling and cooing rather than crying... RESULT!!

Still curious about the XBM mind???

Meant to say that that other day I took out the XBM from the fridge (so it had only been in overnight) shook it up as usual but it seemed to form more of a froth?? I put it in a bottle and offered it to my lo but she refused it. Because of the froth I tasted some and it seemed fine until it hit the back of my throat and it left a soapy taste?? I even got my DH to check - it was the 1st time he'd tasted my BM :D

We thought perhaps the pumping equip or bottles hadn't been rinsed properly, leaving a bit of a soap residue but I tried the next lot and it had the same taste?? Could this be related to why it's looking so watery??

This BM malarkey has me totally perplexed!! **chuckles**

Hi, with regards to the '3 layers', had you not fed for longer than normal? I say this as last Friday i went out, i fed at 5.30 before i went. Normaly i pump at 7-7.30 and then do df at 10ish, but i wasn't back in time and got in at 12am. So i pumped and when i put into a bottle i also had a very watery bottom part with cream on top. I just put it down to not feeding for a long time, my boobs were also rock hard. Since then i have noticed that my milk is alot creamer all the way through. Hows your been since?

Nope, i've been feeding at the normal times - lo's bed time 6.30ish and then I go to bed about 9-9.30 and DH wakes me to pump at 11 while he does DF. Was trying to think if I'd changed my diet in anyway that might have an effect it but can't think of anything???

Glad singing helped, I didn't try that - maybe I should have done!
Kitty's 'difficult' stage lasted about 2 weeks, but settled down after that - so hopefully with singing and a bit of time all should be fine

Soapy taste is normal.  Mine kinda has a faint soapy after taste too.  G has never had an issue with it.  Probably not soap residue on the bottles...fyi.

I posted on here a few weeks ago about soapy tasting milk and someone said that you shouldn't shake the ebm up when it's in the bottle, you should swirl it around to mix it back up. I've been doing that and no problems since.

Thanks for the tip Sally, will definitely try this! :)

Noticed XBM from last nights pump looking more like 3 layers again and the creamy layer definitely thicker... phew! Fingers x'd it's on the up or at least stays like this.

Apparently that soapy taste is due to lipase breaking down the fat in the milk. It's normal.

I spoke too soon, this morning Zac was gagging on his Weetabix (I make it with ebm), I tried it and it tasted awful, like sick. Not sure why, I must have made a dodgy batch for some reason!

ninav... never was hot on biology - what is lipase???

sallydom... definitely doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to BM - I guess that's the wonder of nature ;)

Lipase is the enzyme that digests fat.............HTH!
