Wakes up after naps crying
« on: June 11, 2008, 15:15:34 pm »
My 14 mo old son takes good 1-2hr naps twice a day and gets plenty of sleep at night (9hrs), however, he usually wakes up crying.  I don't understand what is happening.  This has been going on since birth.  I thought maybe he's still tired but won't go back to sleep.  Any insight into this and what I can do about it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Traci

I think if he has always done it then that is just his temperament, some people are always moody when they get up aren't they? Hopefully it means he will never go through that annoying early waking as happy as a bird at 5am  ;D

I was going to say it might be his tempermant. My dd is very similar- even if she has had a rare long nap and is well rested she wakes up pretty grumpy. I think she may be a bit of a diva. Lucky me! : )

I think Tracy says in BWSAYP that babies like this need a little time to wake up properly and holding them quiety or doing what they need to feel okay and safe is just what you need to do until they can wake up all the way. HTH!

Tracy, 9hrs of sleep at night is not all that much for a 14mo. Perhaps he's overtired and waking up crying because of that. Most toddlers need about 13hrs of sleep in total..... about 11-12hrs at night and 2hrs during the day.

Could you post your routine please?

J always woke up like that until he was 2 (give or take; I've slept, sorta, since then!).  Seems as though he grew out of it.  I hope Isaac does, too.  ::)

My DS has always woken from naps and nights crying. Even after 2.5 hour naps or 12 hour nights he wakes crying. I go in and sit in the rocker for a few mins or else he is super grumpy. He just needs some time to wake up but I am like that too so I guess he comes by it honestly!I always read of babies that wake up babbling. That has never happened in our house, ever.

Leorah wakes babbling or singing lalalala which is in fact more annoying than crying when she wakes up halfway through a nap because there is no way of getting her back to sleep  ::)
