hunger? habit - w2s? and squirmer.breast fed 10 week old
« on: June 07, 2008, 14:26:14 pm »
hi
i know this age baby is normal to have 2 feeds a night, but she wakes up regular as clockwork same time 4.30-4.45am

her day easy is 3 hours, last feed is 6.30pm (no DF didn't work) and then she wakes up 1.30am for next feed.  So she goes 6-7hours for 1st stretch of night.
she then always wakes up 4.30-4.45 i feed her,
i did try the dummy once  to see if it's hunger or not, but after her chewing on it for an hour i gaveinto boob.
is it hunger?  or habit? should i set alarm 3.30am and stroke her?

also 1/2hr to hour after this feed eg 5amish she is semi concious squirming and being uncomfortable and eventually wakes crying.  we've winded her and we even change her nappy incase she's too wet, but as i don't want the day to start at 5am (esp with a toddler too!)  i keep it low key. but she will do this for 1hr and i try the dummy and eventually she sleeps and rewakes 7.30am.  why does she do this?

LOs have a cycle through the night.  The beginning part of it is very deep (the 6-7hr sleep you mention) and the second is rather light (between 3-7am).  DH and I found these wakings were for a few different things.

It can be hunger at this age, and even if it's been the regular 3hr from the last feed (1am) it's hard to sleep when your tummy is rumbling.

It can be the dependancy on a prop.  The Paci not being in their mouth so they can fall back asleep after waking would wake our ds and we would have to replug.  But at this age if your lo is using a paci you should keep it unless it is a prop as los will be able to self soothe without a paci at about 3mo.

Lastly we found that sometimes ds would want to just be awake and coo and we were rushing in.  Sometimes he would giggle and wiggle but not really call for us.  He would do this for about 45min-1.5hr and then fall back asleep.  We found that this was because he wasn't getting enough A time in the day for his age.  You might want to look at that.

just a few thoughts on those wakings as we had them too... hth ;D

It couldn't hurt to try... we found the df to wake ds and put him off his regular schedule...

I would try it for a few nights before desiding if it's helping or not.

We noticed that it worked the first night I fell asleep and didn't get up to give him the df... he slept much more soundly through the night.  Although he did wake 2 times it was because he was hungry which I fed and he would go right back to sleep... it was lovely! ;)
