6 month old naps becoming a struggle
« on: July 16, 2008, 02:32:45 am »
Hey, I'm new to this board but I have been sort of been doing EASY since birth.  I initially started rocking my son to sleep and quickly realized that I didn't want to do this as a habit so I started putting him down (swaddled for naps and nighttime) awake but drowsy and then just awake.  Sometimes he would fuss and I would go back in his room and shush him and sometimes pick him up for two minutes and then put him back down again and that's usually all it took.

I never read the Baby Whisperer book but now wish I had.  I've been lurking on this board for about two days now as I would like to get my son on a schedule.  But more importantly, this started yesterday on his last nap....I put him down and he would not settle down and go to sleep I had to soothe him and rock him to sleep and everytime I put him down again he would wake up and start crying again.  He did it again for his naps today too......I'm not sure what's causing this.  I'm very interested in implementing the tools to help his sleeping.

I did the quiz and my son is an angel/textbook baby.  He is also a short napper and has been since birth but he has always been a good nighttime sleeper.

His nighttime sleeping is not affected like his naps have been since yesterday.  I initially thought that he was OT since he was awake a little longer before I put him down for his nap but for all his naps today it has been a struggle.  I checked his mouth and there's no teeth or bumps visible and I can't feel any bumps.  When he's awake he's the same happy baby....I'm stumped.

I'm gonna try the PU/PD theory for his naps tomorrow but based on how mad his cries have been at nap time I predict it's gonna be a STRUGGLE.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hmmm....it could be that your routine needs a bit of a tweak perhaps?  Angel/textbook babies usually take to the average A times very well ... and for 6 months, the average is between 2.25 and 2.5 hours.  So your routine might look a little like this:

4-hour E.A.S.Y.
E:  7:00 wake up and feed
A:  7:30
S:  9:30 (for 1.5 hour nap)

E:  11:00
A:  11:30
S:  1:30 (1.5 hours)

E:  3:00
A:  3:30
S:  5:00 or 5:30 or somewhere in between:  catnap [most babies drop this between 6-8 months, but there are many variations] for 20-30 mins

E:  6:00
A:  bath/wind down and milk before bed
S:  7:30/8.00 bedtime

E:  11:00 dream feed (until 7 or 8 months, or whenever solid food is firmly established)

What do you think?  I would only use PU/PD as a last resort or if there is a sleep prop issue to be resolved.
