1 yr old how many bottles?
« on: July 06, 2008, 20:23:34 pm »
My lovely daughter just turned 1yr old Hip hip hurra!!!
I hear different opinions on how much and what type of milk she should get from 1yr old.

She gets at the moment 3 bottles of formula ( 7am 14pm 7pm) of 200ml. Should I drop a 1 or 2 bottles? She gets of course breakfast lunch and dinner as well.
And one more question: Full fat milk or partially skimmed milk?
Thanks girls  :-*

2pm is usually the first to go and then move the 7am to after breakfast... bedtime may be more difficult.  Full fat milk all the way... for the time being anyway.

Apparently children need full fat dairy produce until at least 2 yrs of age.

We stopped the 2pm bottle with DS1 at about 14months...........though if he woke grumpy from his nap and asked for it I would still give it occasionally for a good few months after that. He is now 34 months old and still has evening milk. He only stopped morning milk about 4 months ago. I was not worried as he eats well and he cleans his teeth straight after. I would say let your LO guide you.......there's no wrong way to do it.

Good luck

Meghan is 15 months old and I give her a cup of milk with breakfast, one after her nap and a yogurt drink as a bedtime snack (she won't eat yogurt, but she will drink it, so this is when we do that).  I agree, full fat milk for now.

We dropped to 2 bottles around 10.5 months I think and then the last two (morning and bedtime) bottles we dropped right around when he turned 1. We dropped the morning one and a few days later the bedtime one as well. I thought the bedtime bottle would be harder but he seemed to miss the morning one more. It took a few days to get him used to not having it. When I'd get him up in the morning he would fuss and keep looking at the chair I usually fed his bottle in. Now we do a sippy of whole milk and still sit in the chair. He wasn't a big fan of whole milk at first but after about a week he started to drink a lot more of it.

Thanks girls.
I started dropping the middle bottle and I aim slowly to drop the morning one as well but she loves her milk:-)
I am also putting less and less in the bottle but when itīs finished she makes a sign with her hand to indicate she wants more...

Guidelines are they should still have a pint of milk (500 ml) of milk a day.  Full fat and preferably from a cup for dental/speech purposes.  Thats the UK anyhow.

In Canada, it's recommended that 1-5 yo should get 500ml or 16 oz of cow's milk (whole milk till 2yo) or dairy equivalent.  DD is almost 4yo and she still gets about 3 cups of whole milk.  She just loves her milk more which is fine with me as she is still a good eater.  DS is a different story but that's ok as he loves to eat everything.  I intent to keep his bedtime bottle of whole milk until he takes sufficient amount from a cup.

The only thing you use avoid is letting your lo suck on the bottle all day long like a soother.  If he is just using it to get his milk (10 min or less) than it is OK until 2yo.

Thanks ..I spoke to my doctor and you are right: 500 ml full fat per day until 2yrs and then Partially skimmed.
She does not use the bottle as soother at all...she doesnīt even use the dummy anymore..so she should be ok.
The only problem is that from the cup, half goes on the floor. is from the sippy cup ok or it still causes speech delays?

I know they recommend open cups here (UK) because of speech delays - but lets be honest - my ds manages about 2oz of water from an open cup with me holding one side - if he was having his milk out of it I'd be there all day.  He uses a spout at the moment and takes a whole 7oz/10oz in less than 5 mins - I'm pretty sure its prolonged use that causes it (mainly from soothers.....)

You're right Emma, it's the prolonged use of sippies, bottles and soothers that can cause delay in speech.  DD's dentist told us that's it fine to still use the bottle past 12 mos as long as it is used as a carrier of milk.  It is that some toddlers have a bottle of milk as their constant companion that he is worry about.
