Intro to solids, and Q about milk
« on: July 09, 2008, 17:52:25 pm »
I'll be introducing cereal to my 6mo, and what I've read say to mix the cereal w/formula or breast milk.  Is it ok if I mix it with water instead?  I ebf, but don't pump, so I was just wondering if I'll need to either start, or get formula...
Thanks!

If your lo is 6 months then you can use small amounts of full fat cows milk in cereal, in cooking, etc as long as the main drink remains breast milk (or formula if that is what you were using).  I suppose you could try water if you liked as well.

One of the main reasons for mixing with formula or breastmilk is so that the taste is familiar to a new solids eater. Rice cereal itself has no taste, so mixing it with something familiar can help with the transition to solids. Even if you don't pump, it really doesn't require much ebm to mix with cereal, especially at the beginning. You can hand express the tiny amount you need right then, if you want. That's what I used to do.

i was in a similar situation, my LO was ebf until i started her on solids. i hated the pump and had a bad experience with it and refused to use it again so when it came to mixing cereal etc i just mixed up a minimal amount of formula to use. it was alot easier than pumping!

You can use water, but like stated in an earlier post your LO may not like the taste of it at first, that's all.
I use water because I hate pumping, although I have a nice pump.
