Beautiful routine gone wrong, HELP!
« on: August 05, 2008, 15:37:59 pm »
Hi

DS is 13 mos and was on a very nice routine.  He goes to sleep well until we tried to transition him onto one nap (he was showing all the signs).  I was following the guidelines, giving him a long nap and a short one so bedtime was still at 7pm.  But things have gone downhill.  He wants to be held to sleep.  His naps are erratic and he is waking up at 5 am.  We were on this schedule (give or take 30 min)

wake 6 am
nap: 10:30-12
nap: 4-4:30
Bed: 7pm

I have tried leaving him in the morning but he can be very loud.  Not crying just calling.  What should I do?  For the past 2 wks, I have tracked his sleep and it is getting less and less.  It is about 12hrs total now.  What should I do?  Should I ignore him till 6?  and just stick with the old routine? Or should I start from stratch?

Thanks.

I would do the shorter nap in the am and longer nap in the pm. Too long of a morning nap can cause EW, rob from night sleep, and lead to OT if it prevents the pm nap from happening. I would try something like this:

6 am: wake
10:30 - 11:15: nap
2:15 - 3:45/4: nap
7: bed

If you are going to shorten the am nap, I wouldn't do it all at once. Rather I would shave 15 minutes off the am nap and add it to the pm nap every few days. What do you think?
