We started the transition 2 days ago. The first day was a dream. We put him in for nap and night and he laid down, did his self soothing and that was that!!!!!!!!! (So excited!!)
last night was less perfect, but still really great. DH put DS in bed and he kept gettingout. He put him back in bed 3-4 times and then just gave up and came downstairs. DS was walking around his room for a liitle bit and talking, but after about 10 min, got back into his bed, self-soothed and success!!!! My question is: is it OK to let him wander a bit (it is childproof) or is that allowing a bad habit that it is playtime and not sleep time?

TIA

Personally, I think it's totally fine to let them wander a bit if the room is childproofed. Our rule was that Tyler had to stay in his room, but he was free to do what he wanted in his room until he was ready to sleep. We allowed quiet toys, like books and stuffed animals, so he could wind down on his own and that's still the way we do it. It's never been a problem (he's 4.5) and I like that his room is a place where he enjoys hanging out and having some time to himself. Think about it...once he gets older and doesn't nap anymore, you might want him to take quiet time in his room and play quietly by himself while your other LO is napping, KWIM?

yes, I agree about the quiet time at some point.
The more I think about it, I think he was just exploring. It is a new place to him. And, I'm encouraged that he was able to climb in bed and go to sleep instead of fight to stay up half the night.
Please, let it continue to go this well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
