so stressed 1 year old stopped eating but drinks milk.
« on: August 30, 2008, 14:22:18 pm »
I'm just so stressed out about it, I feel like crying. Chaunda who turned 1 August 15th, all of a sudden stopped eating and has become extremely picky. Chayse who is 2.5 years old had this problem starting at 7 months of age and still has problems so not sure why I'm stressing out so much about it.

A small history: Chaunda was on Neocate not because she was alergic to milk, but because the Dr. recommended it due to her reflux. She is NOW on milk and has been since 11 months old. She didn't care for the neocate and became the BEST EATER a mother could wish for. Baby food, finger food, suppers we eat, you NAME it. I LOVED IT!!!! Than it put her on whole milk and she gradually grew to love it and that's where it all began (or coincidently).

I have even recently reverted to letting her just make a HUGE mess in the house and eat walking around...that's getting tiring. sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. it's not that she never eats, just has became extremely fussy lately (NO MATTER WHEN OR WHAT) I feed her. There is only like 2 things that I usually have luck with. Scrambled eggs and alphabet noodles with chicken broth. sometimes fruities, cheese, pretzils she'll snack on. She was a HUGEEEE fruit lover, but not anymore. waaaaaaaaaa

What is EXTREMELY frustrating is EVERY morning she has a bottle...usually 4-6oz. Than for some reasons she seems to be more fussy through out the morning. I can barely keep her up 3 hours some days in the morning. I try NUMEROUS times and NUMERIOUS foods (all gone to waste) both in her chair and letting her just walk around with it. the fussiness really gets to me and my 2.5 year old. She woke this morning at 6:45am as an example. I think she had her bottle 7am ish or so. Than come 9:30am ish, she's so fussy I just don't know what else to do. So I give her a bottle and GUESS what she drinks it, lately a WHOLE 7 OZ. That's only 2.5 hours after her first bottle and it's been like this for a LONG time. Some days she won't eat much at all and other days come afternoon and supper time, she might do a little better than in the morning.

I just don't even know how to handle it. I don't know how often I should feed her to find that WINDOW of opportunity. I don't know if I should try a MILLION things to find just the right food she is in the mood for.

Did I do something wrong to have 2 children behave like this. I still have problems with my 2.5 year old. How come others have normal eating children. My babysitter said another person she takes care of...has a bottle in the morning and one at night and that's about it. Although, I have to admit, the way Chaunda has been drinking a lot of milk in the morning and at night, usually during the day she doesn't drink too too much. maybe a snack or two (milk that is).

I can't force her to eat you know and what am I suppose to do when she is so so so so so fussy and want's another bottle of milk. You can only take so much of the fussiness.

I just feel like crying that I'm going through this again.

She slept last night from about 8pm..actually it was 8:10pm by the time she fell asleep until almost 7am. some nights she only sleeps 10 to 10.5 hours. Most days she can barely stay up 3 hours with out desparately needing a nap. Also 1ce or 2ce a week, she'll end up stretching until late morning or very early afternoon before nap. Every afternoon, I make sure even if it takes using the stroller or car ride, to get her to take a cat nap of some sort and I try to put her to bed every night at 7:30pm. Her morning nap usually is from 1 hour to 2 hours and her cat nap is usually from 20 minutes to 40 minutes. These are averages.

nope, she's been on it since 11 months and is 12.5 months now. She's doing great on the milk.

It be teething like Michelle says.  DS was like this just last week.  I ended up feeding him milk and cold applesauce.  We even had to reintroduced a 5 am feeding but once the tooth cut, he was back to normal.  Until the next tooth!

My ds would drink milk every hour if I let him - I agree its so easy to fall into the trap of giving milk if they don't eat - we seem to go in stages where his milk intake starts creeping up and his food intake goes down.

I try to be really strict (when I realise he is back to drink about 40oz a day) and just limit him to 3 bottles a day - morning, before nap and before bed - he can have as much milk as he wants before bed but I limit the other bottles to 3oz in the morning and 7oz after lunch.  I have to go through a bit of a pain barrier when I cut the milk back but hes food intake definately increases.  I always give food before milk now.

I don't think I help because when he doesn't eat I do panic and give him milk - I'm really trying not to - I have put a chart on the fridge to write down how much milk he has had to prompt me!

We've come along way as he was drinking in excess of 50oz a day - now its about 20/25oz.

Yes - I give a cup of milk after breakfast - still not a great breakfast eater, I think he hangs out for his milk but I want him to think of it as a drink rather than food.

We also give solids before milk since 10 mos.  Actuallly it was ds who determines the order of things.  He's not a big milk drinker and loves eating.  So whenever his solids intake is down and the milk increases, then I know there is problem.  However dd LOVES milk always has.  She would drink milk all day if I let her.  Like Emma, I have to really restrict her to max of 3 cups/day.

I know it may be hard with two but when I'm trying to get dd and ds back to eating, I make eating fun.  Like having picnics in the back yard or at the playground or just giving them small bag of food while we go for a walk or drive.  Sometimes just the change in scenery is enough to get them to eat.
