Help for 45 minute napper
« on: August 14, 2008, 10:16:03 am »
My 8 week old baby wakes up from her naps after 45 minutes. What does this mean? I always put her down for a nap after an hour of being awake. For example this morning I woke her up at 7.10am and fed her etc then put her down for a nap at 8.10am which she went down very easy, only for her to wake at 9am. Any ideas??

Did she used to take longer naps? If so then it could be that your baby is ready for a bit more A time - could you try extending her A time by say 5 minutes and see if that gives you a longer nap. If you still get 45 mins you could try another 5 mins. I think by 8 weeks she may be able to stay up a bit longer than an hour.

What do you think?

Yes she did used to take longer naps but in the last few days these have turned into 45 mins. I will try to give her more A time to see if that makes a difference. I just thought an hour was enough for her age. Hopefully this will work.

Also I have just had to wake her up from one of her naps for a feed and she was falling asleep when I was feeding her. Would you put her straight back down for another nap or try to have some activity time?

Hi, from what I've read babies have a sleep cycle of around 45 minutes (whereas an adult sleep cycle is double that) - it could just be that she's naturally coming into lighter sleep, (which I notice with my 4.5 month old) and can't stay asleep as she hasn't yet learned to settle herself back again at such a young age.  You could try settling her again and see if she'll get through another cycle... which she may well need at that age.
