Is he getting enough sleep at night to not need long naps?
« on: September 28, 2008, 05:52:08 am »
I've been battling with 40 minute naps for a while and I was thinking. Could my son (10 weeks, sleeps from 7-7 with a DF and two other feeds) be getting enough sleep at night to not need naps longer than 40 minutes?  I realized I was putting him down when he was bored, not tired so I changed that but he is still not sleeping for longer.  Let me know what you think. I appreciate you're time!

I'm curious about this too.  My daughter (12 weeks) is sleeping from 9-7 without any feeds and she is definitely having trouble taking the long naps she used to take.  But then I notice if I pick her up too early, she is still tired and cranky, so I've been trying to put her down when that happens.  Is your son pretty happy and awake after 40 minutes?  How many naps a day does he take?

hey
even with great nights he still needs long naps during the day.  some kids are short nappers and never take long naps, but more likely he is either Ot or UT when you put him down and this is why he can't get past the 45 min.  props can also cause this but if he sleeps so well at night then probably not.

can you post your routine?  i'll have a look, it may need a tweak.

10 weeks is still young to have daytime sleep figured out (usually babies organise nightsleep from 0-3 mo and day sleep from 3-6 mo) so nap problems are common at this age.

I dont have a routine for the past few days as my mother in law is here so it's changed a bit. He is going 3 hours between feeds and pretty well on EASY but more often AEASY since he isnt sleeping for long.  He is happy when he wakes up so I never know if its a lost cause to try and get him back to sleep. Often times I can get him there but he just wont stay asleep, even with pat/shhh for a LONG time.  I do think he was UT and bored before my MIL, now with another face to see and voice to hear his cues are actually tired cues and not boredom. I'm already boring my son!! He goes down like a champ now that he's actually tired and not just bored. He doesnt use any props at night and only when he really needs it a paci during the day.  I'm trying to be patient as I've been told he isnt learning daytime sleep yet so perhaps we just need to wait it out.  Thanks for your help!

ok.  you're right babies organise day sleep between 3-6 mo, but you can help him out.  he should be capable of taking long naps during the day.  from your comments and the short naps i wonder if now you are keeping him up too long.  at this age A time (all the time he is awake incl feeding) is really short.   max 1.5 hours first thing and after a long (1.5 hour) nap and max 60 min after a short nap.  so if he is short napping he should only be awake for maybe an hour after the short nap and then you should be getting him back to sleep.  this means squeezing in feedings when you can and getting more naps in in a day.  usually at this age they do 3 long and 1 short nap but iff all short he may be taking 6 or 7 naps a day.  if he's not doing this chances are he's Ot and this is why he's doling the short naps.
