Urgent Help PLEASE!!
« on: October 05, 2008, 06:19:30 am »
Ok in desperate need.. have lots of problems  with 5mth old naps
1) DS has been waking up around 5-6 but just sitting in bed talking, not crying till about 630-645.  Sowhen do i count his wake up time as i am worried that taking it to be 630 is creating his probs because he is over tired
2)  he has been only having 45 min naps so if his first nap is that long how long should next  A time be.  Been keeping him for 2hrs from my get out of bed time for first nap (no point posting a EASY because every day has been different at the moment, but trying to stick to routine, around the 45min naps)
3) if i go in at the 45min mark and he is pushing up looking around (belly sleeper) and very alert, do i just leave him till he starts screaming, or take it as had enough sleep and get him up.

4) if he is one of these 45min nappers (please no) is there a sample routine on the site somewhere i can get an idea how the day should be as i am COMPLETELY lost at the moment and just about to loose it

It's a long time since I had a 5-month old, and I didn't do BW when I did so I'm not sure that I can really give good advice, but I'll try.

Early morning waking is generally considered to be a result of o/t - most people suggest an earlier bedtime to combat this.  If you can, persuading him to have an extra/longer nap during the day might help as well.  I believe that it can take a few days to see results, so it's worth trying an earlier bedtime for a few days to see if it makes a difference.

You should consider the time that he wakes up as the start of his A time, rather than when you get him up.  I'm afraid I have absolutely no idea how long his A time should be - I guess you should watch for his sleepy cues to work out when to put him down.

Again, I don't know about the 45 min naps, but you might find that he sleeps longer if he is waking later and is less o/t.

HTH - good luck tomorrow.

Hi,
There is a FAQ I think on the ACTIVITY board that says A times for each month - for a 5 month old it's 2hrs - 2.25 hrs average but obviously that can vary from baby to baby.  I personally count the A time from when he first wakes up in the morning.  There is a thread on the EASY board titled something like "When do you start your day" or "When do you count Wake up from" - sorry can't remember exact title.  If you can't find it, let me know and I'll have a look.
With regard to the early wake-up, yes, I've heard it can be a result of OT.  What time does your baby go to bed and go to sleep at night usually?  Generally I believe they have a 12 hr day / 12 hr night or something around that mark - so for example, if your baby is waking up at 5am and you aren't putting him to bed until 7 or 8 then that would be too long a day.

Have you ever tried to get your baby to go back to sleep at all?  I do know from experience that it's not easy to get them back to sleep if they aren't crying.  I have a fairly early riser - I think he wakes at 6.15 but I'm not sure.  One thing that has been suggested to me recently by a lot of people is to make sure that you get your baby up at exactly the same time each day.  For us, we've decided that should be 6.30am.  Also to start the day with a feed, regardless of when they have fed in the night.  It marks the start of their day.  It will hopefully start to regulate things a bit.

As far as the 45 min naps go - I have been battling with 35-45 min naps myself for about a month but am finally starting to get things to improve (gradually!) by adjusting A times.  I have not tried to extend the naps, for 2 reasons - I have a toddler so it's pretty difficult and secondly because he generally wakes happy and it's therefore difficult to extend them then.

If you haven't done so already, I would start a log book (I log when he woke, when I got him, Eat, Sleep including when I put him down and when he went to sleep and when he wakes up and whether he wakes happy or crying.  I also jot down the Activity time between each nap).  After a few days (for me longer) you will "hopefully" be able to see whether his A times are too long or too short and therefore kill the 45 min nap monster.  45 min naps can mean OT or UT (and from my personal experience, even 30 min naps can mean OT or UT in my little one's case!)  As you may also be aware, most babies 1st A time tends to be shorter than the next naps A times.

See how you go with that.  I am not an expert but I have been battling with similar issues so just passing on what I've learned so far!
Feel free to ask more questions.

He generally goes to sleep at about 7pm sometimes earlier if a crazy nap day.  Put him to bed a little later last night just to try (730) and didn't hear him till 550 this morning so i guess that is somewhat of an improvement.

I like your idea of setting a get up time (yuck - i liked the 7am wake up time he had for a few months)  I think i can cope with 630 - got him up at 6 this morning and back to bed at 8.  First nap 1hr (so better than 45mins) second only 45mins but this one is 1hr20mins and still going   YYYAAAAHHHHH!!  so good start.  I started writing down the day from this morning so hope to give myself a better picture of what is going on.

So hard to get on 4hr feeding when these naps are crazy - working on it all.

So if he wakes up now at 3pm, i would have to give another nap later to get him through to 7/730 wouldn't i??  And if this one is a long nap do i then let him have 2hrs A time?

Hi
Not sure I can't give any advice but just wanted to emphathise with you.  Short naps and early wakings are horrible!!  One thing someone said to me recently is that there may be someone going to work or a dog being let out that may disturb him in the morning?  Is that a possibility?  I find that no matter waht time DS goes to bed he still pretty much wakes at the same time.  Is there anything that helps your LO stay asleep during those naps - being held, riding in the car, being in his swing?  I know ideally we don't want to be doing any of these things but for my LO nothing makes any difference which is why at 3 mths I started to think he has reflux - just getting it looked into - so I wondered if your son may be uncomfortable in some way?  Only a thought.  It's really hard to do 4hr easy with rubbish naps isn't it!  Do you have the book BW solves all your problems?  I think there's a case study in there about short naps etc. and says what she does...

Yeah i have that book, but I lent it to a friend with a new bub a few weeks ago cus i thought i had it all under control  :-\

On what could be waking him - we have a huge tree in the neighbour's yard which is kinda close to his window and i know the birds often wake me up with their screeching.... you could have worked out what is waking him.  DH does sometimes go to work early (a nurse) but doesn't usually get up till about 610 so have usually heard bubs by then any way...  Might go and shut his window so he can't hear as much of the birds tomorrow.  Will see how that goes.... thanks!!!

Yes, if wakes up at 3pm would need a catnap for sure at this age.  That will enable him to get through until bedtime.
