Finger Food
« on: November 02, 2008, 18:32:34 pm »
Hi Friends
My daughter is 1yr. and is only interested in finger food or yogurt. As she is not yet master in feeding herself, very little food goes in and she seems hungry much of the time. We are vegetarian so pieces of meat is not an option for us.
Please suggest me what should I be doing. Also, I couldn't find the sticky for finger food. Would you mind posting a link for it?

Thanks
K

You could try different kinds of beans, chick peas, pieces of cheese. If you eat fish, then my two love fishcakes. A tin of salmon or tuna, mashed up with some cooked potato (1 baking potato size), half a beaten egg, a bit of cheese if you fancy and some veggies mashed in too. Make them into little patties, coat them in either breadcrumbs or matzo meal and either fry, grill or bake (take about 15-20 minutes in a moderate oven) - this is a recipe from Nigella Lawson's book 'How to be a Domestic Goddess'. She also does a fish free version called greencakes where you just use lots of different green veggies and cheese instead of the fish.
Not sure about the link to finger food, but you might find some ideas in the BLW sticky posted at the top of the main solid food page.

my one year old also prefers not to eat off of silverware. with his fingers he loves to eat slices of sweet potatoes. he loves omelettes with grated zucchini, garlic and cheese, or with peas and cheese. he eats small cubes of whole grain sourdough bread with tehina or houmas or tomato paste. he sucks on cherry tomato slices. he also eats lentils or veggie soups or bean dishes but this i insist on the spoon. there is also pasta made from brown rice and quinoa that he will eat if i cook it very mushy and slice it small. you can also make veggie burgers with ground tofu and veggies or with buckwheat or quinoa or other grains.

Hi there,

At 12 mos, the majority of babies are on finger food.  SOme are very good at it while others just needs more practice.  I would keep offering  and eventually her pincher grip will improve.  If you feel that she is still hungry but doesn't like you to feed her, then you can use a fork to pierce the food and help her guide it to her mouth.  Some moms even hold the food and let their los guide their hands in.  Mastering the fork/spoon doesn't come till much later.  You can introduce them but don't expect too much.  As to what to feed, I found it much easier to just offer what the family is eating.

Here's a link to help you various recipes/books: http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?board=10.0

And definitely check out the BLW Support thread.
