11 mth old crying hysterically before sleep
« on: November 26, 2008, 14:32:33 pm »
We went through a phase with dd#2 about 2 mths ago where she would cry hysterically every time she went to be. After about 1.5 mths of this it stopped and everything was going well for about 2 weeks.WE then went away for a night with dd and since we have been back (2 weeks) dd has been doing this again.

We walk in her room, put her in her sleeping bag, close blinds, turn on sound machine and lay her down. She lays down and starts talking, I leave then within about 2 min she starts screaming.
I go in and she stops and stands up.
I lay her down and say it's just nap, I will see you when you wake. She is smiling, I leave.
She starts crying again.
I go in again...
This goes on sometimes for 1.5 hours and she eventually falls asleep due to exhaustion.

I have also tried staying in her room and just slowing moving away from her crib. She jsut keep popping up and smiling.
As long as I am in her room she is happy, the second I leave she is hysterical.

What am I doing wrong? What can I do?
This started out only at night time and now its naps as well.
I dread putting her to sleep.

Hmmm..it could be SA or it could be the 2-1 nap transition kicking in.  Can you post your routine for me and we'll see what's happening.

That routine looks really good.  Do you think she's ready for longer A times?  Some babies take to having just one nap a day quite early...maybe she's one of them????  If you want to try it...then keep her A times to 5hours and put her to bed early (ie. an 11 hour day rather than a 12 hour day).

7 wake
12.00 - 1.30 nap
2-3/330 nap
6 bed

Otherwise, it's definitely SA.  There's a FAQ sheet on the walk in / walk out method that is useful for SA. If you can't find it, let me know.

in the schedule above, you have nap time 2x, should it be like this?

7 wake
12.00 - 1.30 nap
6 bed

What was I thinking???  You're right of course.  Be flexible during this transition.  Some days she may still need 2 naps and others only 1.  She is very young....so keep an eye out for any signs of OTness.  If you see it happening, then modify your routine to suit her needs.

Good luck...please let me know how it goes.  I have my fingers crossed.

BTW...one of the Moderators LO's actually transitioned at 8 months!!
