Please help with 7 week old not taking naps!!!!!
« on: December 02, 2008, 17:13:45 pm »
My 7 week old hs been on 3 hour EASY for about 3 weeks. I am having a horrible time getting him to nap. He never sleeps for more than 20 mins without waking. He is very overtired by the end of the day. I look for his cues and seem to catch them in time but cannot get him to sleep for very long. I have tried everything from white noise to darkening his room, to swaddling. Is this something he will grow out of. He spends most of the day crying and gets worse as the day goes on. He does pretty good at night wakes up once for feeding. Afraid that if he continues to not nap it will affect his nighttime sleep. We usually spend the three hours between feeds trying to get him to sleep, not much  activity time, he is too tired and cranky. His schedule is as follows
6:00-6:30-feed
6:30-7:15-wake
7:15-9:00-sleep
9:00-9:30-feed
9:30-10:15-wake
10:15-12:00-sleep
12-12:30-feed
12:30-1:15-wake
1:15-3:00-sleep
3:00-3:30-feed
3:30-4:15-wake
4:15-5:00-sleep
5:00-5:30- cluster feed
5:30-6:30- wake/bath
6:30-7:00- feed
10:00 dream feed
3:00am-feed
PS I am sure someone has posted this concern in the past but I barely have time to write this before he starts crying again. He is also bottle fed eats 4 oz a feeding. Any advice/support will help.

Hi and welcome to the BW community!  I'm not sure I understand what you've posted (sorry, tired brain here)... you say he doesn't sleep for more than 20 minutes at a time but you've written his routine as though he's getting 1.45 minute naps.  Is he not sleeping for that time or are you having to resettle him every 20 minutes during that time?  Have you tried to use pat/shh to extend his naps or resettle him?

Is he swaddled?  Does he have a paci?  Is he in his crib for all naps?  You say you have tried everything such as white noise and room darkening, has it been a consistent thing?  He's still so young and he's learning how to settle himself to sleep, you just have to show him the way.  It's a process and it will get better, I promise!  :)

Sorry my post was confusing I am very tired. The nap times posted are designated nap times but he does not sleep that long. He sleeps for about 20-30 mins and  is up again. I usually spend the majority of the time getting him back to sleep and before I know it, it is time for him to eat again. I have tried pat/shh to resettle him when I see him stirring and waking and it works some times. I am not even sure if when I am using it if it is normal sleep noise or he is really about to wake up. He is swaddled and does use a paci. I try to put him in his crib for all naps but lately have resorted to having him fall asleep on me in order to try and break the overtired cycle. I will try again...hopefully it will be more successful. However, I will say that the white noise is amazing at consoling him, it only takes a few seconds and the crying stops every single time.
