too much milk
« on: November 26, 2008, 19:33:08 pm »
Hello, I am looking for some advice on too much milk production. My DS is two month old today.

My problem is that during the night I have my breasts really really full in a way that makes impossible for my Ds to eat without swallowing to much air. It makes him very frustrated that we have to stop for burping too often. To avoid this I started to pump milk out before BF. It is really tiring that during the night I have to listen to all the noises he makes so I can properly identify when is the time that he will be hungry in ten minutes so I have time to pump out.

I also know that pumping out all the time will keep up overproduction. When I pump out I can see what is My DS's problem: it is flowing, it spurts out extremely fast and intensively. It would be probably even too much for a bigger baby to swallow that fast.
It is also difficult to find out how much I should pump out. Even when I pump out 100ml I can see that it still comes too fast.

If only I had transparent breasts!

Another questions. My DS eats his whole feed in less then 10 minutes. Could that be too demanding for his body, stomach to deal with that?

Thank you in advance!

I d really appreciate any thought, experience!

Check these out, don't know if they'll be of any help:

You are right that pumping is a really bad idea.  Have you tried block nursing?  It's bascially where you feed from the same side for two consecutive feeds.  It's really hard work initially and you have to be really careful to avoid blocked ducts etc but it's a really effective way of reducing supply.  It'll be hell for a few nights but you should start to see a huge improvement inside a week.  As soon as you notice things leveling out, start feeding from opposite breasts at each feed again.

Forgot to add that feeding for 10 minutes is completely normal for a lot of babies - especially if you are experiencing over supply issues.  :-*

Just wanted to send hugs as I had the same problem with my LO....It just stuck with it to be honest, through lots of bad stuck wind and her coming off and on so much that she ended up not getting enough of the good stuff!  In the end my boobs just regulated themselves.  I dealt with the wind by doing a baby massage course and found this helped massively.  I also used gripe water (found infacol gave her a runny tummy)

Thank you! I have not heard of this blocked nursing. I will also read the links you suggested maybe that will be enough.

Nododo, I also have sometimes the feeling that he might stop before getting enough of the good stuff because he is getting mad about coming on and off.

Today I had even too much milk at 13 pm! this is getting worse! I need to read those links and find out what to do.
I might come back with questions if any left.

I love this website! It is so helpful. In the future when (if)  I gather enough experience myself I will come back to pay back by giving advice to new comers to the mummy world. Anyway that is far ahead as I am really just beginning studying.

I checked out the sources (the only reason why I have time to read is that our napping troubles are almost gone due to the advice I got at the nap message board). That s it! Overactive let down reflex and overproduction. There are enough hints how to sort this out, so I will just try and try.
Thanks again!
