Changing formula
« on: December 01, 2008, 19:09:16 pm »
Not sure if this should be in here or in bottle feeding.

We had to go onto a soy formula for Ellie as she really didn't agree with dairy. It would make her very sicky, she smelt really bad and she had very runny, green poo, eczema. Now she is eating she is having dairy. Milk on her brekkie, cheese etc and she seems to be ok. Do you think now she is 1 we should stick to the soy or do you think we could switch to normal. Being totally honest, it is only cos it is soooo much cheaper and easier to buy than soy formula. If we don't need to use it then great. What do you all think :-*

So she seems to be good on soy formula and also good on regular cows milk?  When did she have the previous problems of being on regular formula?

Hi Faye, so she is good with dairy now? I say try the whole milk, a few ozs once a day for a few days and see what happens. My abbi can have a bit of cheese and yoghurt and hidden dairy but give her whole milk and whooooooooooa the poo goes runny and comes up in a nasty lady bit rash, its horrid!!!

I would say try with a small amount and build up. You may find she is ok, or has a level she cant go over or its a no go.

I totally agree with Emma.  Lots of kids can handle hidden dairy, but not straight whole milk.

I would try it though.  I would rather offer whole milk than soy milk too.

Cant help with changing the formula but I do know that when my nephews had the same intolerance the doc prescribed their formula for free !!! Not sure if all docs the same maybe we are just lucky but it may be worth a shot.
Anything is better than paying for the stuff.

I agree with previous posts, its definately worth trying. Just take it slowly and write things down so you don't miss out on any small symptoms of a reaction if they occur.

Thanks everyone :-*

Melanie, she always had odd poo, always sick and eczema, but I just put it down to her being little, being in an incubator, possible reflux, anything really. Then when she was about 6 weeks she started to smell, worse than my DH :P ;) It was so bad, and someone said about dairy (on here I think) I cut it out of my diet to a degree and the odd bottle she had we swapped to soy. I did try the comfort cow and gate stuff that is meant for easy digestion first, still had the same thing, still made her grotty. Swapped to soy at about 8 weeks I think and she was so much better. Normal poo, she stopped throwing up so much and she didn't smell, it was a miracle!!! :D  Put her on solids at 6 monthish and she had yogurts etc and would still come out in eczema and started going how she was again so I stopped them but gradually put them in again and she seemed ok. I have had to give her the odd normal formula when I've not been able to buy the soy and she would start again with the eczema etc. But the last time was about 8 months.

Just as an aside she was given chocolate at 4 weeks by someone. I was not impressed in the slightest!

But I think I will start trying normal milk now and see, Kelly that's a great idea to write things down, thanks :-*

Ahh okay.  Yeah definitely write things down.  You could try one day giving her an ounce of real milk, write down the time you did it, best time is in the morning, and watch for any symptoms over the next day or two or three.  Sometimes eczema is slow starting.  IF nothing happens I would do one ounce again in the morning for 2 or 3 days in a row.  If still nothing then I'd say to try more.
