My dd will cry in the middle of the night.  I use to go right in so I could go back to sleep sooner.  Several times I have gone in and she was still laying down.  When I went in she stood up and then I had the challenge of winding her back down.  If I had left her be for 5 minutes or less she goes right back to sleep.  Is the best thing to just let her get herself back to sleep?  and maybe if she cries for more than 5 minutes go check on her?

my son does the same thing.  they're either just having a brief awakening, or actually just crying in their sleep.  they probably don't even know that they're doing it!
