PU/PD and P/S - is there really a difference? PLS HELP
« on: December 06, 2008, 02:14:04 am »
I just finished tracy's book and I am confused.  I want to start with the Pat/Shush for my preemie 3mo.  But she says that if he cries, pick him up and pat shush until he calms, then put him down and pat/shsh.  Pick up again if he cries.  Isn't this just PU/PD???

Also, when training your baby, is it OK for them to cry (not violent crying where he is vomiting, but more than whimper) while they are in the crib and you are pat/shush if you are talking to them and holding their hand with the "other" hand???Do they recognize this as you "being there" or is this just another form of crying it out?

Please help - I am so afraid of ruining my baby's trust that I think I am taking it too far to the AP side.

Hi and welcome to BW  :-*

No shh/pat is different to pu/pd.  PU/PD is used for babies over 4 months of age.  Even though you pu with shh/pat the main aim is that you trying to teach you LO to calm themselves.  With shh/pat you will continue shh/patting even if they calm down but with pu/pd you stop the pu/pd as soon as they calm down and is typical used (but not exclusively) to wean from a prop, NW, EW and AP.

Here is a link just to help you with the technique babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=26672.0.

You are not breaking ypur LO's trust with shh/pat because you are there and helping them through the transition of sleep with shh/pat so you are doing a good job  ;).  We don't go in with a mantra cry as described in Tracy's book but as soon as it becomes a real cry we immediately go in and attend to them.
