13 mo old 50 min naps
« on: December 11, 2008, 16:23:22 pm »
My 13 mo old has been sleeping exactly 50min for both the morning and afternoon naps.  What does that mean?  It is incredible rare for him to sleep longer for his naps.  Could this mean time to transistion 2-1?  But he gets very tired early in the morning.  We do battle with EW some but even if he sleeps 11 1/2 to 12 hours he still gets tired early.  So, I'm scared to do 1 nap and have a major OT baby on my hands.  He is so sensative to getting OT and we then really battle with some ugly EW.  So, is 50 min OT or needing to change to 1 nap?

Yup! You're starting to transition! But don't worry -- we won't put you *or* LO thru the trauma of one nap right from the get go! There's a transitional period first.

What usually works for moms is to limit AM nap so that a longer (1-1.5 hour) PM nap will be taken.  We tend to start by limiting to 45 minutes.  If that doesn't get you an hour or longer PM nap, then try limiting AM to 30 minutes.  Even 30 min. is usually enough at this age to give them the energy they need to make it until PM nap.  You'll have to play around with the timing of PM nap once you start limiting AM nap; some kids do OK on their normal A time despite short AM nap, but others need A time to be slightly less -- 3.5 hours  seems to be about right for most.

Even though you're starting the transition now, it could still be 2-3 months before you're fully on one nap.  If you have a kid who's sensitive to being OT, then you'll probably have to take the transition pretty slow.  My son is also sensitive to being OT, so we actually got down to limiting AM nap to 20 minutes before making the leap to 1 nap.

Simultaneously to limiting AM nap, you will also slowly be pushing it later as he is able to stretch his A time.  Usually, once your child can make it to about 11:30 for first nap it is time to make the leap to 1 nap.

Thank you for the reply.  It has taken so long to reply due to ds is sick.  But, I have noticed the first nap will generally last about 50 min but then he seems ready for a second nap about 1 1/2 - 2 hours later.  Very short.  I have not put him down at that point yet because it is such a short amount of time I figured he would be UT and have a shorter nap.  But, I may try it.  He is very sensative to being OT.  I pushed his nap yesterday back until 10:30 and he did fine but continued to cough thru entire nap and eventually woke himself up.  But, we have to try different things. Very strange time for their naps.
